Why We Like The XTR RT-MT900 Centerlock Disc Rotor

Designed to keep your braking system cool on long, demanding descents, the XTR RT-MT900 Centerlock Disc Rotor rapidly dissipates heat for more consistent braking performance in extreme conditions, as well as longer pad life and reduced brake fade. These rotors are optimized for the XTR M9100 and M9120 brakes, and feature a new design that improves cooling and decreases weight compared to the previous version of the XTR rotor, the RT-99.

Employing Shimano's Ice Technologies Freeza construction, these rotors use a 3-layer design consisting of two steel braking surfaces sandwiched over an aluminum core. This allows Shimano to take advantage of the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, whereas most companies simply use steel rotors. And thanks to a new heat dissipating paint on the exposed parts of the aluminum layer, the RT-MT900 rotors see their surface temperature cooled by up to 20-degrees Celsius compared the previous XTR RT-99 rotors. The 140mm and 160mm sizes are optimized for XC and focused on weight reduction, whereas the 180mm and 203mm rotors are made for aggressive trail and enduro with an emphasis on efficient cooling.

Life Changing Brake

Familiarity:

These rotors are so good I was thinking about getting the XTs for a lesser price but decided to go with these and I made the right decision. The cooling fins work so well. Before these I had non fin rotors and after only a few laps at the park I could cook and egg on them. Now with these it takes more than double the runs to get them even close to that hot. And even if they are hot they still maintain the same braking power the whole time. Would totally recommend to anyone who is having overheating problems or squeaky-brakeidis.

Much better than 9100

Wow. I was running the 9100 160mm front/back rotors and once they get hot they warp and grind until the cool down. It was so unbelievably embarrassing. I switched to XTR and now it is a non issue. I suspect Shimano is done with the 9100 rotors and all the pros are on XTR for a reason (not just minor weight decrease).

Killer upgrade

Familiarity:

Like previous reviewers, I went with the XTR rotor on the road bike to upgrade my Ultegra rotors. The XTR rotors are around 20g lighter (rotational mass!) and look sooo much better. There's a reason why so many World Tour Teams opted for these rotors in the 2020 Tour de France ... I also suspect these handle cross winds better, as they have more ventilation and won't catch the wind as much. No brainer upgrade for the aesthetic and weight-conscious cyclist. Road, Gravel, MTB, etc. Brag to your friends about saving some GRAMS on that next group ride. You know you will.

Great rotors but bit pricey.

I have been running ice rotors since they came out, and never had anything but good things to say about them. I always run XT, but I found the new version with the fins way too shiny for my taste, so I had to bite the bullet and upgrade to XTR, which are about $30 extra, for few grams lighter BUT black fins - I know, but I have to keep the ride looking good :-). Anyway outside of that, those are solid rotors, and I am sure they run bit cooler then the older version, but not noticeable to me. For some reason I like the old design better, cleaner look, but I am sure the black XTR will grow on me - the shiny XT has no chance though.
