XTR PD-M9100 Pedals

With Shimano recently updating its venerable XTR group, the XTR PD-M9100 Pedals get a redesign as well, providing more stability, and the ability to shed mud better than ever before, along with 2 spindle length options. These improvements are the result of a refined pedal body shape that offers a wider edge-to-edge contact area over the outgoing 9000 pedals for an increased shoe to pedal interface and thus, better power transmission. It also features rounded edges to help shed mud and prevent accumulation.

The retention mechanism is basically the same as the benchmark SPD pedals that's been around for decades with wide, open-ended tabs that allow easy entry and security when clipped in. The open design allows muck to flow through, so it doesn't hamper your ability to engage in a hurry and you can get back in quickly after an impromptu hike-a-bike or remounting after a sandy 'cross pit. The larger flat platforms on the inboard and outboard edges are also a boon to gravel riders looking to keep the sole of your shoe solid on the pedal, as are the two spindle lengths (52 and 55mm) to dial in your fit.

The XTR PD-M9100 Pedals come with SM-SH51 (single release) cleats and are also compatible with SM-SH56 (multi-release) cleats. They have chromoly spindles and spin on sealed bearings. The tension of the retention mechanism can be adjusted via a hex screw on the back of each pedal on both sides.

They just work!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These pedals just work, they don't break, they shed mud, they bounce off rocks and keep going. I have been running XTR mountain pedals for about 18 years and have never been disappointed. This pair is no different, I have about 1200 miles on them and they are great. I have tried other models and brands and keep coming back to XTR for my clipless mountain pedal.

I had been thinking of trying different pedals since refurbing my MTB bike to a 650B cyclocross/road bike. I've heard since the early 90's that Shimano SPDs were the best as far as ease of entry among other things, and now I'm a convert. I have no idea why cleat and pedal seem to magically connect 95% of the time for me but they do. The other's I've had (Onza, Crank Brothers) were alway great pedals by my standards, but initial clip-in was never better than 50/50. That's the biggest selling point for me, the bearings, mud shedding, durability, etc. I expect to be comparable to all the other high-end SPD pedals. I love being able to just step in and go.

Which spindle length is the same as the older designs?
Any particular advantage to be gained with either spindle length?

The standard size would be the 55mm spindle.

Upgraded from XT's and don't regret

Had to decide on new bike build whether or not to stick with the trusty old XT's or go for broke. Not regretting the little extra coin for these bullet proof pedals.

I've been riding the XTR trail pedal on my MTB for years, When I built up a new gravel bike, these were the obvious choice.

Durable, light, and they perform well. Not much else to say about the best of the best when it comes to pedals.

The chosen one

    Is there even a different pedal that you should consider? Probably not. These are great. If you dont ride flat pedals - this should be your go to.

    So Smooth, So Fast

    I'm loving these XTR pedals as an upgrade from my previous set of XT's. They are running smooth and easy to adjust, even after lots of miles of gravel and trails. There's a reason these are the gold standard!

    Solid XTR quality and performance. Just don't buy into any hype of why you need to replace your 9000's. Pedal contact is not necessarily better. It is very shoe dependent. In fact it is worse on my shoes- more rocking, not as tight contact on shoe treads so it rocks back and forth. Ah well, they look top notch.

    Are you using Shimano cycling shoes? Shimano pedal and footwear designs are made for each other, so pairing these pedals with either the XC7 or ME7 shoe should improve your 'rocking' contact concerns.

    in my experience SPD pedals are absolute bomb proof and superior to any other pedal system out there (crank brothers, attack etc) and new M9100s are 314 grams per pair!!

    Great Pedal, Bad Luck?

    I have been using Shimano for years. 3 seasons ago, I picked up the XTR pedal and gave my boy my old pedals. The left XTR pedal is now broken beyond repair and my boys 12 year old pedals are doing great.

    I did check and there is a three year warranty. I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, I am giving the Crank Brothers titanium pedals a try.

    I think you're referring to the m9000 as the m9100 have just been released.
