Everybody's favorite gets even better.

If you poke around online these days, you'll notice a strange universality on most manufacturer or retailer websites — including our own: nearly every top-shelf stock build of mountain bike, from British Columbia-ready enduro rigs to the sharpest, fastest bikes on the XC circuit is built with XTR brakes. The reasoning is simple: they've established themselves as some of the most reliable, durable, and controllable brakes you can buy, and the new generation — these Shimano XTR M9020 Trail Brakes — are the newest generation of the beefier of the two versions of XTR stoppers, likely to yet again become some of our best-sellers.

We should begin with a note on compatibility. The new M9020 brake levers are compatible with the latest generation of Shimano's I-Spec design, I-Spec II. If you've got a pair of I-Spec II shift levers, you can save valuable cockpit real estate by attaching both the shift and brake levers with one clamp.

A host of additional improvements make the 9020 Trails the best and most capable XTR brake yet. For one, titanium hardware is now employed front to back. On the business end, a new one-piece caliper design is lighter and better at heat distribution, and now employs an extra mounting bolt for increased stiffness and power. Ice Tech radiator pads and insulated pistons continue the XTR tradition of almost entirely mitigating heat as an issue in almost any condition.

Up on the control end, a new carbon fiber lever blade takes shape over an aluminum skeleton for reduced weight and boosted stiffness and durability. That level rotates around a new Sil-Tec-coated server wave roller for the smoothest-feeling XTR brake levers yet, and all is held in place by a redesigned, lower-profile bar clamp Like all XTR parts, the M9020 brakes were entirely engineered and are assembled to perfection in Japan (as opposed to the excellent but less-expensive XT and SLX brakes, which come to life in Malaysia), ensuring longevity and performance that will make these brakes as popular in ten years as they are now.

The Shimano XTR M9020 Trail Brakes come individually, so please order both front and rear sets if you'd like a pair. The brakes were optimized for performance with Shimano's Ice Tech brake rotors, which are not included.
