Nobody puts more thought into brake rotors than Shimano, and the SM-RT99 XTR Race CenterLock Disc Rotor is proof of that. The hybrid steel and aluminum construction saves weight and manages heat buildup. Even better, it's been topped off by Shimano's lightweight and user-friendly CenterLock hub/rotor interface.

While it's awash in complex Japanese tech, the rotor's main job is still a simple one: to scrub speed. That makes the braking surface the most important part, and it's shiniest highlight is Shimano's IceTech construction, which involves bonding two stainless steel braking tracks to an aluminum inner-core in a speed-scrubbing sandwich.

Although this bond is exposed to a great deal of heat and friction, we've yet to experience any separation of the layers over hundreds of hours of ride time—even for gravity sessions—and the benefits are well worth the non-risk. Not only does IceTech result in a lighter weight rotor, but the aluminum core sheds heat faster than a standard steel rotor. By reducing heat buildup in the brake system, your brakes provide more consistent power while simultaneously reducing the risk of boiling the brake fluid.

Shimano's obsessive attention to detail is also immediately visible when looking at the alloy cooling fins. Those wavy inserts on the inner-diameter of the braking track aren't just for show. In fact, they're the latest evolution of IceTech construction. The fins channel heat away from the braking track, which dissipates heat into the air instead of channeling it back into your brake caliper. This equates to even more effective heat management than the previous generation, the SM-RT98 XTR IceTech rotor.

To keep the weight to a minimum, Shimano attaches the braking surface to an aluminum spider. And since those grams add up, the spider attaches to the hub via Shimano's CenterLock rotor mount standard. This attachment method saves weight over a six-bolt hub and rotor, and it has the added benefit of making rotor-swaps much quicker.

Please note that these rotors will only work with CenterLock hubs, and they cannot be adapted to six-bolt hubs. If you need a Shimano IceTech rotor for six-bolt hubs, consider the SH-RT86 XT IceTech rotor.

All the stopping power you will ever need. I used these for steep downhills and have yet to heat them up enough to compromise performance

Much straighter and stronger than 6 bolt

    My 6-bolt rotors would almost always be wavy right out of the box. The centerlock rotor is straighter and seems to be stronger since I've yet to bend one or even have it become wavy

    I was apprehensive at first to go away from 6 bolt but I was surprised by how true these were. Stopping power is about the same.

      If you have centerlock and want the best rotor out there, here it is.....Really wish they'd make a 6 bolt version of it though.

      When in doubt, XTR

      Serious bit of tech. Feather light, looks the business, and the highest performance. I dont think i push these rotors hard enough to test the cooling, but they certainly have plenty of bite all the way down my steepest DH segments.

      Do not recommend with sram brakes

      These work great with Shimano calipers as intended; the regular Centerline and Centerline X do fine as well, but I experienced a catching sensation with these rotors and SRAM Force calipers, presumably due to the larger pad area grabbing the rotor arms each revolution. This contributed to some accelerated pad wear and imprecise braking.

      Though you'll see plenty of people running the setup, I do not recommend it. There are plenty of other combinations you can ride that won't wear your pads unnecessarily fast.

      No Slowing Down A Vintage Cerwin Vega

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

      The SHIMANO XTR SM-RT99 CENTERLOCK DISC ROTOR works perfectly for my vintage Cerwin Vega AT-15. Normally I would use this smaller rotor on the rear wheel but this time I used it to help make the modern high frequency driver fit on the vintage cabinet. The vintage driver was slightly larger in diameter. It looks so good I am surprised Cerwin Vega isn't using shimano xtr components. It did take some minor modifications like drilling out the rivets in the rotor to remove the center lock piece. And, the HF driver needed some sawing on the asymmetrical mounting bracket on the back to fit. But even though this is not it's intended install, it fit with less than a mm of tolerance. Check out the photo of my updated and highly modified Cerwin Vegas I brought back from Arkansas from a dear friend.
      Shimano Components are found in a lot of products, now even speakers. I am taking my vintage Cerwin Vega on a ride through the rock gardens and Classic rock rocks on shimano!

      Light, 12 mm locking included

      160 mm is 115 g and lockring included. Light and easy to mount. The lockings work for 12 mm through axles but not for 15mm in the front. Needs a different locking! Comp Cyclist should start to stock these!
      Good brake modulation, I use these with XTR race brakes and there is no lack in stopping power.

      Light, Quiet

      super lightweight, quiet while braking - even in wet conditions. I use with a non-XTR brake set - just SLX level - and they work just fine.

      These are centerlock only rotors. Must have center lock hubs to run these rotors. The freeza technology mix with ice tech really keeps the heat down and braking power consistent. Help to not burn up rotors after a long descent.

      Stop on a Dime

      I put these on my Ibis Mojo 3 and have the Ibis 742 wheelset - you'll need hubs with centerlock. I wanted an aggressive short travel bike and bought a 203mm in front & a 180mm rotor in rear.


      - Lightweight

      - Cools fast

      - Stopping power is next to none

      - Easy to install and remove if need be, considerably easier than dealing with 6 bolt rotors


      - the 15mm (or 20mm) lockring does not come with the rotor. And like Geoff T noted below, they're a bit of a hassle to find. That said if you're lucky enough to have a good local bike shop, they're likely to have one.

      The bottom line is you can't beat these rotors. They're light and work great if you've got hubs with centerlock.

      To use these, you must have Centerlock hubs! If you do, look no further for a rotor! These are light, durable and cool extremely well. I highly recommend them.

      Is the rt99 180mm heavier than rt98 180mm rotors?

      Manufacturer weights show the RT99 as 130g vs. 122g for the RT98. However, you would experience drastic performance advantages by improved heat management on the RT99s aluminum fins

      You need a SM-HB20 lock ring to use these rotors with a 15/20mm oversized axle. These are hard to find.

      I had the icetech rt86 rotors that wouldn't stop squealing so when I upgraded my pads (truckerco semi-metallic organic) I switched out the rotors too the new rt99 and they are awesome. new setup doesn't make a sound and stopping power is definitely better. cant tell if its the pads or the rotors or both, but I like the upgrade to say the least
