ShimanoXT SM-RT86 Rotor - 6-Bolt
Item # SHI001B
Stay frosty.
Functionally, XT SM-RT86 Disc Brake Rotors stop equally in comparison to Shimano's apex XTR line. That's because of IceTech, a shared technology on both models. The difference between the two lies in a slightly lighter XTR spider that's reserved for gram-obsessed racers. Weight difference aside, the XT rotors provide the same cooling benefits to help your brakes stay frosty and on point when you're testing the ragged edge for extended periods of time.
In reality, most of us aren’t going to feel the benefits of a few grams lost when they're so centrally located to the hub. However, what we are going to profit from is the three-piece Ice Tech Rotor. It is essentially two pieces of steel optimized for friction sandwiched over an aluminum core.
This means Shimano is utilizing the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, where other manufacturers solely use steel throughout the braking surface. Additionally, the quicker cooling alloy core more efficiently transfers heat to the alloy spider. The resulting cooler operating brakes will last longer and provide more consistent stopping in the most trying conditions.
- A workhorse brake rotor for XC, trail, and all-mountain use
- IceTech steel/aluminum sandwich dissipates heat
- Aluminum spider further contributes to heat management

Ice tech rotors are designed for the most recent M8000 series Shimano brakes and don't work with earlier makes and models by design; the inner aluminum spider is too large and hits the brake pads or calipers. Adjusting the calipers to keep these beautiful puppies, only eliminates the braking surface. While they in fact dissipate heat on a long down hill, they are softer, more easily damaged or bent, they take little abuse and do not brake better than 12 dollar stainless steel rotors with good pads. I purchased 3 pairs for the GDMBR and refuse to ride them. Jenson and REI refuse to publish negative reviews to protect a sales magnet. Buy them only to ware as a sign of your gullibility, keep them only as a sign of your vanity.

Great rotor

Good, hard-working rotor. Dissipates heat pretty well which will help slow the fade on the long descents. I have had mine a couple of seasons and don't see any signs that I will need to replace them any time soon. Will pair well with XT BR-M8120 and XT BR-M8100

Work great
These rotors cool fast so you don't lose braking power on long downhills. I have them on all my bikes. They last a long time and work well with the ice pad. They stay quiet too.

for the 203 needs better shipping
I got the 180mm and it was perfect. The 203 needs to be taken to a mechanic to have it fixed.

Cool rotors
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I got the Ice tech rotors to replace my stock SRAM rotors that were always over heating, I'm impressed with their ability to stay cool on long descents, so far no issues at all, I love them!

Will the XT SM-RT86 rotors work with XTR BR-M9000 brake calipers? What are the best 6 bolt rotors to use with the XTR BR-M9000 brake calipers? What size rotors should I use for XC riding? I'm leaning towards 160mm. I'm not sure if this info will be helpful in answering my questions, but my bike is a Pinarello Dogma XC with Mavic Crossmax Pro Carbon rims, and my weight is around 200lbs while dressed for riding. Thank you for helping me with these questions.

Yes they will work GREAT, shimano recommends this rotor for the 6 bolt down hill bikes. Most people for XC will have 180mmin front and 160mm in rear, but the bigger 203mm in front will keep it cooler if that becomes an issue, just need a mount adapter to fit to your forks. Any 6 bolt disc rotor will work, but these are a great choice. Hope this anyone who has this question.

arrived bent
Box was in great shape, no sign of damage, but the rotor was bent enough that it wasnt useable until I spent 2 hours bending it back into shape, which I couldve just done with the original.....

Sweet Rotors!

I bought these as an upgrade to my Shimano Deore M615 brakes. They run cool and quite with the IceTech finned pads. They look great too! Highly recommend.

Quiet and easy
The iceshield on these rotors keeps them very quiet even after hours of use on downhill runs. Easy to install.

Great Rotor
These rotors paired with Shimano brakes are outstanding. If you want increased braking power, especially on longer descents, get these! Also- getting a larger rotor will help with increased braking power, just make sure you have the proper adapter for your bike if you’re increasing the size of the rotor. I would be hesitant to mix and match rotors and brake calipers of different brands (Shimano/SRAM/Magura) because of different rotor thicknesses…I would definitely recommend if you currently have lower end Shimano rotors or are just looking to replace your XT rotors.

These are the only rotors I'll run on the mountain bike! Feel free to shoot me an email at jdraper@backcountry.com if you don't know which size is going to work best for you!
