Shimano XT M8000 1x Crankset $169.95
Keep moving forward.
The new Shimano 11-speed XT group borrows a huge swatch of technology from last year's updates to the top-end XTR line, resulting in a component group that closely mirrors its more expensive sibling and offers a more affordable option for those of us on a budget. The XT M8000 Crankset keeps the gears turning with advanced Hollowtech II construction and chain management features to keep you on track and zooming down the trail.
While Shimano's bearings have always been solid, the M8000 gets an update with smaller bearings and improved seals for an even smoother ride that efficiently transfers power into forward motion. The Hollowtech II cold-forging process results in crankarms that are both stiffer and lighter than most solid crankarms, and they install in a flash with a thru-axle and pinch bolt design.
The M8000 chainrings bring some additional chain-retention features to the table to make this crankset hum, including Dynamic Chain Engagement (DCE) design, a special tooth shape that results in a claimed 150% better chain retention than standard chainring teeth. The DCE tooth shape is a signature squared-off and slightly hooked profile that grabs the chain when it needs to, and lets it slide by at the back end of the pedal stroke for smooth power over any terrain.
The XT M8000 1x Crankset is available with several chainring size options, allowing riders to maximize the trail ride experience based on their specific gearing needs.

Sold as 1x, still uses 2x spider
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I bought this Shimano XT 1x specific crankset for my conversion from 2x10 to 1x11 thinking it would help achieve the proper chainline and hopefully avoid any issues when backpedaling on the largest two cogs. After receiving the crankset delivery, I discovered that the only difference between this and the 2x version is that this contains 4 chainring bolts and no chainring (as I expected), while the 2x has 2 chainrings and 8 bolts?! I thought a mistake had been made in what was sent to me when I made this disovery. This 1x crankset actually uses the same 2x spider as the XT crankset sold as 2x!! Sure, a 96BCD ring is supposed to be attached in the larger chain ring position, but it seems like a crankset sold as 1x specific would have a spider for only one chain ring positioned a bit further in toward the non-drive side. Normally, with a 2x, we avoid crosschaining between the big ring and three largest cogs and also avoid using the 3 smallest cogs while in the small ring up front. With a 1x, we need to ride in all 11 cogs and need to move the chain line in a couple millimeters.
It's common for many to experience the problem dropping the chain on the largest two cogs while backpedaling, I think this set is getting returned. XTR 1x crank apparently has a true 1x spider, but the price is more than I can justify. I'll probably just keep the old 2x XT cranks since they will have the same chain line and I can reuse my existing Wolf Tooth narrow-wide single ring.
At this time, the Tech Specs on this product page indicates
Compatible Components: Shimano 11-speed 1x drivetrains
Note that there is no indication that it is also compatible with 2x drivetrains and 2 Rings. Yet, the Tech Specs do indicate multiple options for Arm Length and Chain Ring Sizes:
Arm Length 170 mm, 175 mm
Chainring Sizes 30 t, 32 t, 34 t
It would save a bit of hassle if the website description and photos made it clear that the spider wasn't 1x specific on the Shimano XT M8000 (1x11S w/o CR).
In my attached photo, you can see that the spider has bolt holes for two rings. Hopefully this helps others avoid purchasing this crankset in hopes it will achieve an optimal chain line for a 1x drivetrain.
Better than ever!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
XT stuff is the real deal. With the latest update, XT honestly feels like XTR. Don't get caught up in the status race. Unless you're a really serious racer, it's hard to make an argument for XTR from a value perspective.
Is the bottom bracket included?
The bottom bracket is not included with this crankset. The bottom bracket you will need will depend on the frame you're installing the crankset on. Feel free to reach out to me directly and I'd be happy to steer you towards the correct bottom bracket!
is this set available in boost or do i need to buy the arms and rings sperately?
Hey Ian, for a bike with Boost spacing, you'll want the Shimano XT M8000 Boost 1x Crank Arms ( SHI00AX ) paired with the Shimano XT M8000 1x Chainring ( SHI008O ). Let me know if you have any other questions or anything I can help out with - feel free to give a shout to my direct line 801.204.4547 or email! Best, Connor
Can the XT 1x be converted to a 2x if desired. are the crank arms the same for both the 1x and the 2x
will this fit a santa cruz bronson frame 2015? And what length should a certain rider chose? 170 vs 175
Hey David - With the Shimano XT BB-MT800 Bottom Bracket (Item# SHI008U) this XT Crankset will work on your Bronson. Feel free to shoot me any additional questions.

I currently have 1 X 10 Shimano set up. Will this crank work with 10 speed gearing or only 11 speed?
Hey James, I chatted up Shea from Competitive Cyclist and he says it WILL work with a 1X10 set up.
Whats the difference in the XT M8000 that comes with the chainring and the "FC" version where you buy the crank arms and chainring separate?
There is no difference. They are the same parts, we simply offer the package in addition to the individual parts.
looking at this 1x crankset. What else will i need to upgrade? thanks
Hey Ian W,
It depends on what bike you are putting these cranks on and what components you have now. Feel free to shoot me an email so I can help you figure out what else you might need.

Hi, is this a complete crank, bottom bracket and ring set up or just the crank arms and chain ring?
This is just the crank arm and chain ring, the bottom bracket is not included. Are you looking to upgrade components on your bike or switching to a 1x11 drivetrain? Feel free to shoot me any more questions about Shimano parts or anything bike related.
