Description

Making a great brake even better.

Few things in the mountain bike world get as much universal praise as Shimano brakes. In this day and age where a bike brand will typically spec the same brand for the drivetrain and brakes, product managers will buck convention and choose Shimano brakes with another firm's drivetrain because they just pack so much power and modulation and have an excellent track record with reliability. XT brakes usually get the call and we've been enjoying the ones that arrived with the redesigned M8000 group and now Shimano has upped the ante. The new XT BL-M8020 4 Piston Disc Brake gets upgraded to, you guessed it, four pistons for a 20% increase in braking power and better heat dissipation versus the two piston model.  What remains the same is the lever shape with an integrated master cylinder and the stealthy black finish that matches the rest of the current XT group. The narrow clamp creates a tidier cockpit so it plays better with remote lockouts and droppers and for the ultimate in integration and streamlining, its compatible with the latest generation of Shimano's I-Spec design, so it can anchor I-Spec II shift levers saving you more space on the bars by attaching shifters and brake levers with one clamp.

Ideal candidates benefiting from the higher piston count calipers would be heavier or more aggressive trail and enduro riders or those riding e-bikes. The increased power and modulation will come in handy on steep and technical terrain as well as the lever's adjustability. It allows you to dial in the controls for an easy reach, tool-less and on-the-fly, along with a free stroke adjustment that lets you pick how much throw the lever has before the pads make contact with the rotor.

Shimano reworked the pivot location so the arc of the lever mimics the natural movement of your fingers for enhanced power. The superior modulation is due in part to the Servo Wave technology that adjusts the piston's travel relative to lever travel. As you squeeze the levers, the gap to the rotor quickly closes, then slows to permit predictable modulation. This allows the pads to sit further inbound relative to the rotors so they are less likely to drag. The 4 ceramic pistons push Radiator Pads with integrated fins that dissipate heat and reduce fade on long descents full of trail features. An adjustable banjo fitting allows for easy hose management and the routing of various frame designs.

The lever/hose/caliper assembly is sold as a front or rear unit and comes pre-bleed and ready to install, made even easier with its hinged split clamps so you don't even have to remove the shifter or grips. Rotors and adapters are sold separately and the XT Ice Tech Rotors are highly recommended.

  • More power and control on tap with this popular mountain bike brake
  • Predictable modulation allows for precise braking
  • The ceramic pistons reduce heat build-up
  • Finned pads further dissipate heat
  • A minimal clamp doesn't take up much bar space
  • The pre-bled lever/caliper/hose assembly is ready to install

4 piston or bust

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Excellent brake, as expected. Have used SLX and the lever feel is almost identical, but those are 2 piston. Would be curious to compare new 4 piston SLX compared to these. Either way, Shimano is the move - clean looking and easy to maintain. Just do it!

XT brakes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I replaced my old Avid brakes with these. Did the work myself. All I can say is outstanding. These brakes allow you to gently push down for a even stop or hard to come to a hard stop. They are that good. Why spent the extra on the xtr when these do it all.

Competitive Cyclist as always delivery was quick and 2 day free. Exactly as described. Hate paying tax but I will buy from them regardless as I still saved.

Stopping for heavier riders

Nothing new in this review. Great control, allows you to read the line before getting into it. I weight 215 and sent time in Moab after upgrading to these and made the riding much better and more confidence to ride more

    Twice the fun

Twice the pistons of the already amazing 2 piston XT brakes?!? More stopping power than a ... something that can stop really well. These are great! Can interchange with the old xt levers.

      Powerful Brakes

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Super reliable and powerful brakes. If you need some extra stopping power look no further.

Dose this brake come with a rotor

HI Jacob, this brake set does not include a rotor.

No. You have to buy the rotor separately. But they still have them far less than others do. I think 32. The newer ones are 54 and not much of a change.

      Wow!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Decided to go with the four piston calipers on my new build and now have about 50 miles on them. Unbelievable! Stopping power and modulation is way better than my two piston XTs that I was running. Easy set up, no bleeding necessary. Running 180/180. You won't go wrong!

      Wow!

except these are actual called 4 piston (2x2 per side).

      Love these brakes!

After several rides on my new bike with SRAM guide ultimate brakes, I couldn’t stand them. I pulled them off and went back to shimano. This was my first time with the 4 piston XT’s and I am very happy with them. I ride everything from XC to downhill and never worry about these brakes.

Thanks for your review. Glad they're treating you well so far!

        Killer Brakes

Sweet setup. Lot of stopping power for the days you need something more. Great for a enduro setup of a light rider.

Pretty nice brakes still after some time on them. They can be a little inconsistant, but it is minor. A lot of stopping power! 10/10 buy again.

          MOAR POWER

Shimano takes everything you loved about XT brakes and now gives you 2 additional pistons on each caliper to give you more power. With all the crazy of long travel 29ers these days, something like these would give you a lot more power without having to go to a pricier brake like Shimano Saint.
