A couple years ago, I upgraded my old touring bike to Ultegra 10-speed (with bar-end shifters), except for the old (circa 2007 IRD 'compact') front derailleur which I left in place. Compact crank 46-30. I'd like better front derailleur shifts, and cannot get the old one adjusted well (it often throws the chain out towards the pedal - limit screw either too little or too much). Can I use my 10-speed front bar-end shifter with this FD-R8000? I understand the bar-end might(?) pull more cable, but perhaps that's OK if it results in a shorter throw with this FD? Perhaps an easier throw, and better adjustability? Thanks.

If I have an 11-speed 105 setup, can I just change the derailleur. Or do I need to get an Ultegra brifter too?

Will this work with a 10-speed drive train?

Hi Jeffrey, this is designed to work with Ultegra 8000 components and as such it would most likely not work with your 10 speed hoods. In short no it would not work.

Upgraded from 105 5800
- I've used it several times
upgraded my old 105 5800 FD to the new Ultegra 8000 and it is a noticeable difference. The cable path was a little weird to understand at first but once you see a photo of it setup it makes perfect sense. The built in cable tensioner is a nice touch and let me get rid of the inline barrel adjuster I had with my previous front derailleur . No complaints with performance it shifts excellent and faster than I expected the front derailleur to and was surprisingly easy to get dialed in.

Definite improvement over the 6800
I thought long and hard about getting this upgrade because the 6800 worked so much better than my previous front derailleur (Campy Centaur). I finally pulled the trigger on the R8000, and I think it was worth it. Setup is a bit less intuitive than before, but there are good youtube videos and it really is not that hard. In exchange for there being more steps, you get spot-on perfect cable tension. I never could get it quite right with the 6800, making shifting the kind of adventure I don't like. Helping this is the fact that the barrel adjuster is now a hex screw on the unit, and there are markings showing you exactly how much to tension the cable. Shifting becomes crisp, easy, and predictable without a lot of experimentation. Also a big improvement is the elimination of the long lever arm and the projecting cable above it. My calf was constantly brushing them in the small ring--now the cable end projects behind the unit, and out of the way of anything. Whether the shifting potential in a mechanical sense is better than the 6800, I can't say because I'm pretty sure I never got the install optimized. With the 8000, I know I'm getting all of the potential (barring worn cables or housing). I honestly don't know what Shimano could do to improve the front derailleur at this point, unless it be to make it more aero.

Will this front mech work with a RD5800 shifter (105).

Hey Barry! You can absolutely run 5800 series 105 shifters with this. For future reference, all 11 speed 105 and Ultegra components cross over perfectly! If you, or any other readers have any more questions you can feel free to reach out to me directly at email@example.com. Thanks so much!

A Worthwhile Upgrade
- I've put it through the wringer
I upgraded my 105 5800 groupset to the new Ultegra R8000. The weight savings and the improvement in performance made this a worthwhile upgrade. While the new Ultegra FD-R8000 will not save you any weight when coming from 105, the improvement in shifting performance is very noticeable, especially when shifting from the small to the big ring. My only complaint is that I found the initial set-up to be somewhat difficult, but once I got it dialed I was very happy. The FD-R8000 weighed 90 grams on my PT digital scale.

Crisp even when cold
- I've used it several times
Recently upgraded one of my bikes from Shimano 6800 to the new R8000 group and couldn't be any happier! The upgrades to the cranks, derailleurs, brakes and shifters have made this one worthwhile upgrade. I have been amazed at the crispness of the shifting performance with the new derailleurs and shifters, and it reminds me of the smoothness of the "older" Dura Ace 7800, but much more refined in how quickly it shifts. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Scott - will these be compatible with 7900 D-A?
