Description

Ultegra FC-R8000 Crankset

Shimano's Ultegra FC-R8000 Crankset represents true trickle down from Shimano's flagship Dura-Ace group not only visually, but in the technological features that make both cranksets light, stiff, and shift with precision. The new, aggressively angular lines increase stiffness, providing excellent power transfer. The chainrings and bolts were also redesigned to provide better chainstay clearance for shorter rear end bikes or road disc bikes with wider dropout spacing.

Shimano has the technical expertise and manufacturing prowess to create industry-leading shifting and stiffness to weight for the rings and crank arms, respectively. The latter property is owed to Shimano's Hollowtech II arm construction, a heavily guarded secret. Where other manufacturers drill the arms to reduce weight or create two sides and clam-shell them together, Shimano is able to forge the arms and still keep them hollow. As with the Dura-Ace 9100 series, Shimano adds some width to the R8000's arms and orients the spider to more efficiently transfer energy during important power phases throughout the pedal stroke. The asymmetric spider and chainring spacing allows Shimano to put two chainring bolts close to the wider arms, further adding rigidity to the rings for better shifting and power transfer.

As noted above, Shimano's excellent chainring engineering continues with the FC-R8000. We once heard a rumor that Shimano owns patents on every single chainring tooth's shape, pin, shift ramp, etc. We're not sure if this is true, but we do know that, compared to other rings we've used, Shimano rings in operation tend to run much quieter, wear at a much better rate, and offer more positive and quicker shifting.

The tooth profiles on this crank have been slightly altered to improve shifting and chain retention at the extreme chainlines seen on the shorter stays of newer bikes combined with larger cassette ranges and wider rear spacing. To lessen the chainline, the inner chainring has been brought in .4mm towards the bike, and specially designed chainring bolts ensure enough clearance between them and the chainstays. To optimize front shifting, Shimano recommends the new FD-R8000 front derailleur as it's designed for the new chainrings' placements and allows for proper frame clearance.

Features that have been on Shimano road cranks for years are still present in this design. A 24mm steel spindle is bonded to the drive side aluminum arm and is compatible with many frame and bottom bracket—ahem—standards. The non-drive arm slides onto the crank axle with splines and allows for a precise fit. The included crank fixing bolt adjusts bearing preload and the pinch bolts secure the arm to the spindle, and the Hollowglide chainrings are lightweight and super stiff. Similar to what Shimano has done on their mountain chainrings, the outer chainring is aluminum and bonded to a composite structure, increasing stiffness while decreasing weight.

The Ultegra FC-R8000 Crankset is offered in 4 different lengths and chainring combinations, so regardless of your fit or bike's requirements, you are covered. All chainring sizes work on the same proprietary asymmetric 4-arm spider, so changing out chainrings for different terrain, disciplines, or seasons is easy. We're once again blown away by the performance and value Shimano packs into its Ultegra cranksets and feel confident that this crank will serve us well for years with the flexibility to swap it between bikes if needed.

  • The economical racer's crankset comes of age
  • Bold new lines signal an aggressive and improved crankset
  • Chainrings designed for larger cassettes and disc brake bikes
  • Spider accommodates all sizes of Shimano road double rings
  • Shimano's suite of Hollow technologies reduce weight without sacrificing durability or efficiency

failed after 1700 miles

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Drive side crank arm pulled apart from the rest of the crank near where the chain rings attached, after about 1700 miles. At first it felt like I had a creaky bottom bracket or a bent pedal axle. Had lbs replace the bb, swapped out pedals, checked the chainring bolts, then saw that the crank was coming apart.

Replaced Oval Concepts 520 crankset that came with my Fuji Altamira. The crankset and bottom bracket were all that weren’t Ultegra in the drivetrain, so once the bottom bracket started creaking I decided to switch them out. After a few hundred miles these have worked very well. Very smooth and seem to be high quality. Purchasing from Competitive Cyclist was great. The price was lower than anywhere else and shipping was fast. Zero complaints there at all.

Can I combine a 46 large ring with the 34 small ring?

Really great purchase

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have a been using Ultegra components for years and have not been disappointed. I had a 2014 FSA carbon road crankset that just wore out and was creaking quite a bit so I decided to upgrade to this. I've got a couple hundred miles on it and really like it. It's stiff, shifts smoothly and looks pretty bad a$% Good stuff-

Great Crankset

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Bought the Shimano R-8000 in 52/36 172.5 to replace OEM Oval crankset on my Kestrel RT-1000 which has Ultegra components. Have put ~300 miles on the crankset so far and really like it. Very smooth shifting between rings. Along with new BB, this is a great upgrade to my bike.

Thank you for the review!

Hi I’m just getting to biking and just bought a used Trek frame with BB90 bottom bracket I was told, and I’m getting all confused on what crankset will fit onto it. Is the ultegra FC R8000 would work with no problem. Thanks Joseph

>Rating:

Does the Ultegra R8000 Crankset come with a bottom bracket, or does the BB have to be purchased separately?

Hi James, The BB is purchased separately, depending the spec of your frame. Thank you

Is this compatible with my Ultegra 10 speed cassette?

>Rating:

Is this compatible with Di2 do you have to remove chain links if changing from larger set

Yes it works well with Di2. You may have to remove links but I change from 53/39 to 50/36 and do not remove links without a problem.

are the new dura-ace (FC-R9100) chain rings compatible with ultegra (FC-R8000)? BC doesn't have the ultegra FC-R8000 52-36 chainrings (36T) in stock...

Hey Michael, thank you for reaching out. Yes, everything will be interchangeable between dura-ace and ultegra. Only difference will be weight and different materials used.

Michael N. Yes the dura-ace 9100 chainrings are compatible with the 8000. That have the same 110mm 4 bolt pattern.

Meh.

These are pretty similar to the last version, in my opinion not any huge improvement besides the change makes your old rings not match up.

Awesome Upgrade

Familiarity:

This was an awesome upgrade from my original set. I bought this to improve my training and I couldn't have asked for a better product. Ultegra is simply awesome!

Perfect blend of high-end and cost

I've put it through the wringer

Love the Ultegra groupset. Classy, feels great, light, and significantly cheaper than higher-end builds for marginal weight gains. Very happy with it!

165mm Ultegra 8000 cranks

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Great cranks from Shimano, as usual. Was using another crank with my Ultegra 6800’s and decided to upgrade. Works great with the older iteration of Ultegra. The beauty of Shimano! Shifts better and less chain rattle/creek from the chains. Next time, I’m sticking to the group set. Great price and shipping from CC. Long time customer. No cons that I can think of. My 6800 Stages PM fits perfectly on these cranks. The color is a little different though.

Great

Ahh... my question exactly re: the Stages PM. Thanks!

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wanted a compact gearing for a bmc road bike that i built and these fit the budget! They are strong and light weight.

Big improvement

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Recently cracked the chainring on my FC-6800 cranks. The FC-R8000 cranks are noticeably stiffer than the FC-6800. I have this paired with a Wheels Manufacturing BB30. So far so good. Great price from CC Highly recommend.

Thanks for the tip mom the Wheels Manufacturing BB30 adapter. It is very difficult to find chainrings for FC-6800 cranks,

will this crankset work with old ultegra 6800 groupset, I want to update only the crankset

Yes, The compatibility "spacing" will be the same, and you can use this crankset with a 6800 group ad vis-versa

I know it's listed as 11 speed. Can this be used with a 10 speed cassette?
