Ultegra BR-R8070 Flat Mount Disc Brake Caliper

Shimano's Ultegra R8000 continues to deliver virtually the identical performance of Dura Ace at a price the self-sponsoring racer can afford. With the Ultegra BR-R8070 Flat Mount Disc Brake Caliper, riders now have an Ultegra model hydraulic disc brake for the first time offering confident control in all riding conditions. Much like the rest of the group, technologies from the top-tier Dura-Ace R9100 road components trickle down to this caliper giving you lightweight performance in the mud and snow on your 'cross or gravel bike, or in the rain on your road or tri bike.

We're pretty sold on disc brakes on all of our bikes. Mountain, 'cross, and gravel are no-brainers but it's prime time on the road now too. The UCI hasn't changed its weight limit for decades, and racers are starting to compete on them getting their lightweight bikes to the weight limit and harnessing all of the benefits that come from riding disc brakes. They are winning big races now too. The hydraulic Ultegra BR-R8070 provides tons more modulation and power than you could ever hope for from a rim brake setup and that helps provide confidence on any descent. Shimano uses the minimal and lightweight Flat Mount design that helps it integrate smoothly on a fork blade or chainstay reducing any aero detriments. Calipers come with finned brake pads to better dissipate heat and when paired with SM-RT800 rotors, the system offers excellent heat management capabilities surpassing that of the already excellent ICE TECH Freeza rotors for consistent performance and no heat-related fade even on the longest descents.

Warranty Issues after 4k Miles

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These came on my Litespeed Ultimate Gravel. These seem to do the job, but as a heads up they apparently have an issue with the elastomer (not sure what the part is called) failing, to where the caliper does not spring back out fully. Fortunately Shimano provides a 3-year warranty that I am pursuing. I probably spend more time on the road than off road, with no hills or mountains, so probably no harder on them than the average user. I have also been plagued with intermittent rubbing for as long as I have had them, though I cannot say that is necessarily the fault of the caliper.

Gets the job done.

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These are working just fine on my bike using RS685 shift levers (i.e. the "old" versions before Ultegra), though I'm getting some uneven pad wear since I installed it ~1600 miles ago. IMPORTANT POINTS: 1) The "rear" brake caliper doesn't come with the adapter plate shown in the image! That's *really* annoying, since my bike required the adapter for the rear brake when using a 160mm rotor. 2) I *think* the front caliper comes with the adapter by default, hence the weight difference shown by Competitive Cyclist, but it's worth double-checking. 3) The actual calipers are identical, so I think the only difference between "front" and "rear" is whether the adapter plate is included. Some bikes can run 140mm rotors on the rear with no adapter, but many will need the adapter to run 160mm rotors on the rear. On most bikes, the front adapter is required regardless of 140mm or 160mm rotor size. I hope that saves somebody some trouble! Just buy two "front" calipers if you need the adapter plates on both the front and rear. Or buy the adapter plate separately if it makes sense in terms of overall price. ---------- For those mixing and matching old levers with new calipers: I purchased a new frame that had *flat mount* instead of *post mount* for the brakes. I was able to use a post mount adapter on the front to re-use my old R785 calipers, but there wasn't enough clearance on the rear of the bike to use the adapters, hence this purchase of the modern Ultegra calipers. Huge hassle to figure that out and I wasted money on post mount adapters for the rear that I couldn't use. Looking back, the cost of the post mount to flat mount adapter ($20) is 1/3 of the cost of getting a proper flat mount caliper, so I should have gone all-in and replaced both calipers with flat mount versions. Plus, the post mount to flat mount adapters are ugly and ungainly looking.
