Why We Like the SM-RT76 Rotor

When we're riding long gravel roads with punchy ups and downs we're relying on our stopping power. And, we're counting on that even more when the weather turns and the rain sets in. The SM-RT76 Rotor delivers consistent stopping power in all conditions so we can ride easy. It's compatible with metal and resin pads, and its aluminum construction drops grams and dumps heat.

Humble Yet Capable

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Shimano's RT86 "Ice Tech" line might get most of the attention, but their ancestral RT76s still get the job done. RT76s aren't quite as light because only the carrier is aluminum; the rotor is good ol' reliable steel. The upside of this is that RT76s tend to last longer and hold up to abuse better as compared to the aluminum-and-steel sandwich offered in the RT86s. The RT76s are also more forgiving of brake pad material (resin, ceramic or sintered metallic). Can't go wrong with either, but if price and versatility are your top concerns, the RT76 might be your best option.

Direct replacement for old rotor

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Fit and quality are very good. Must be made to very close tolerance at no caliper adjustment was needed when this replaced the sold Shimano rotor.

For touring, bigger is better!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Increasing the rotor size from 160 to 180mm was the right choice for loaded touring on highways and trails. I appreciate the control and added surface area that this larger disc provides. An adapter is required when upsizing and Backcountry sells the adapter too.
