Shimano’s SLX groupset has been celebrated as the everyday rider’s groupset since it was released, so when Shimano announced news of a full revamp, the company immediately piqued our interest. Introducing both functional and aesthetic upgrades, Shimano redefined what’s expected of a workhorse groupset. We’d be thrilled to spec a new do-it-all trail frame with a one-by SLX drivetrain, adding the Shimano SLX BL-M7000 Disc Brake to give us the reassurance that we’ll have long-lasting stopping power for every unknown situation we can’t help but dive into.

Taking inspiration from its pricier XT and XTR drivetrains, Shimano aimed to shave weight and enhance responsiveness with the BL-M7000. Sure, older SLX brakes functioned well enough, but these have been cleaned up to function even closer to their pricier siblings. They’ll still weigh more than XT, but the gap has been narrowed without a matching increase in price.

A more streamlined master cylinder saves weight on the main caliper body, while slimmer clamps reduce clutter on the bars. Shimano revisited its Servo Wave cam system when updating the levers, making subtle alterations to improve power and responsiveness when you squeeze them fast ahead of a steep, unexpected switchback. Though they are not included with this brakeset, the Centerlock rotors weren’t spared the wave of Shimano’s wand, returning with an alloy carrier and new shape that enables them to more efficiently dissipate heat.

Best buy brakes out there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I think these are the best deal out there for brakes. They have slightly less power than XT giving them a little more control. Compared to SRAM Guide and Code, I chose these. More power than Guides, and more control than Codes. No need to spend extra money

Quality Brake

    This is amazing brake at a reasonable price. High quality you've come to expect from Shimano. Super easy to set up and powerful . Highly recommended.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    Okay, there is absolutely no reason to get the XT or XTR versions. The only difference is the adjustable contact point that doesn't even work on the XTs. So for significantly less coin, you get the exact same performance and internals with reach adjustment.

    What do you have to say about Shimano disc brakes? Depending on how you feel about modulation, you may or may not like the on/off nature, but one thing is sure... they are going to stop you each and every time without fail. As far as the on/off nature, you actually get used to it fairly quick.

    I have both these brakes and Sram Guide RSCs. Both are excellent brakes with approximately the same stopping power. The Sram's ramp up smoother (modulate), but again you'll get used to either one very quick.

    For the price though... it's Shimano for the freakin' win with the SLX disc brake.

    Bonus, these things don't honk at all unless you get them wet. That can't be said about the Sram's paired with the Centerline rotors.

    Haven't had any issues with it. Works consistently and reliably on my XC bike. I chose to use XT components on my Enduro bike though.

    I recently purchased Shimano SLX hydraulic brakes to replace the existing brakes on my mountain bike. I am extremely satisfied with the product. The braking is very smooth and the modulation is perfect. What I like most is the ease of trimming the hose length to fit the bike as well as the simplicity of the brake bleeding procedure. A great choice for someone who is looking for a brakeset that is Inexpensive and consistent.

    Great but check your weight

    Great feel and powerful for trail. However if you have long descents and your over 220lbs or so I would make the jump up to zee or saint. The fade is totally manageable but you'll find yourself riding cautiously on the latter part of a long descent.

    Great entry level brakes

    Fantastic braking power. Good ergonomics. The knob on the lever makes on the fly adjustments easy. Same quality performance you'd expect from Shimano components.

    Unanswered Question

    I saw on a few websites that these are i-spec ii or b. Does that mean they come with two mounts or is that just a mistake?

    Great Brakes

      They are very good brakes. Great stopping power, but not much modulation - all or nothing. The shape of the brake levers contoured to your fingers well for comfort and control. The heat sinks on the calipers did their job of dispersing the built up heat. But, if you plan to do long descents, I recommend purchasing the XT Ice Tech rotors, which are compatible with 6-bolt hubs.
