Why We Like The Shimano XC902 S-PHYRE Cycling Shoe

If you glance at the starting line cyclocross or cross-country race, you'll most likely notice the Shimano XC902 Cycling Shoes on the riders' feet, and for good reason, too. When we get a pair of these shoes in our hands, or better yet, on our feet, we experience that world-class fit, low weight, and efficiency that the pros count on to earn a paycheck. Shimano constructs the XC902 with a one-piece, reinforced synthetic upper with numerous perforations allow the feet to breathe. Dialing in the fit comes courtesy of the dual Boa Li2 dials, offering independent and micro-adjustable tension across the top of the foot.

On the rear of the shoe, Shimano uses an external cup that covers the carbon sole and the back of the heel. This design supports the heel, preventing twisting and rolling, stabilizing it for more efficiency. A gripping fabric inside the shoe further bolsters the foothold, providing a solid foundation for dishing out the big watts at the race start and on the pedaling upstroke while maintaining traction on a slippery surface.

Missing full range of sizes

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Will be returning. Been wearing 45.5 in Shimano for abour 8 years, can't find this shoe in 45.5 in the US anymore. Ordered 46. Fit was suprisingly comfortable in the toe box but noticeably too long and too loose in the heel. Wary of going down to a 45, wondering if the 45Wide is wider in the heel as well or just in the toe box, sadly companies don't seem to disclose too much about their last. Sole feels really soft and grippy which would be nice for CX in cold muddy terrain or wet rocks but don't expect to get away with these as multi-purpose shoes or the sole will wear too fast. Fit is actually true to size, if you know how a "race" last or have any experience with correctly fit shoes, buy your running shoe size (I wear an 11 in running shoes). I run these larger than my alpine and nordic ski boots which I wear 28.5 and 45 respectively. But going to a 46 was too much.

Great fit, extremely comfortable, durable, and a great value for any cyclist that puts in a lot of miles. Highly recommend.

Unbound Tested

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Wore these straight out of the box for this year’s Unbound 200. While I encountered many challenges during the race, none were shoe related, despite gobs of sticky mud and nearly five miles of hike-a-bike. They remained comfortable and stiff throughout over 15 hours of continuous use. Great shoes! (Runs a half size small)

You generally get what you pay for with anything in the bike industry, these shoes are no exception. However, it's always important to consider the purpose and use for a product. In the case of the XC902 S-Phyre they are 100%, without question a Bike Racers Shoe. They are super light, stiff, and feel great on my feet (I wear 8.5-9US and got the 42EU). They include a couple interchangeable arch supports to help dial in fit for a variety of feet. The heel cup is wonderfully designed, the silver material on the inside is hard to explain, but it's almost like a cat tongue, your heel slides into the shoe without issue but when pedaling the fabric grips your heel reducing foot movement in the shoe. Concerning drawbacks, I would refer back to my statement about purpose and use for bike products. I wouldn't say this is a shoe that is going to last a serious XC rider more than a year or two. Since they're purpose built for high performance you lose some durability in the sole and lugs. But if you're looking for no compromise performance, these are the shoes for you.

A perfect shoe scuttled by the foot bed

The previous generation of these shoes was perfect for my narrow, flat feet. So comfortable that I put SPD's on my road and just used these shoes. Also, if I am going to pay $400, I am going to get my money's worth. The one Achilles' heel? The sole wasn't thick enough and wore quickly. When I saw the redesigned/beefier sole of this new shoe, I was very excited to try them out...thinking that Shimano may have crafted the perfect shoe (for me). Alas, they changed the internal footbed. The previous had a relatively flat/gentle curve in the arch that sat flush with the sidewall of the shoe. The arch in the new model is more pronounced and doesn't sit flush. This causes the edge of the footbed to dig into the arch of my foot...causing discomfort with every pedal stroke. If not for this dealbreaker, the shoes are tremendous.
