Why We Like The RC9 S-PHYRE Wide Cycling Shoe

Wider-footed fans of the glistening blue presence of the Shimano RC9 S-PHYRE at the front of the pack will appreciate the dedicated wide-version of what may likely become a legacy shoe. Perfect for a higher volume foot, the RC9-wide is most likely the best fit you'll achieve this side of going custom, and as one of the primary contact points with the bike, comfort and fit are critical to ensure pedaling performance hour after hour.

The integrated midsole and upper material comfortably envelop your foot for a secure hold, while the dual Boa Li2 dials and PowerZone wiring guide cinch down for the optimum tension. Precision cable tension is a critical performance tool, whether you are unwinding from an epic five-hour climbing session or torquing down for a finish sprint in the criterium.

Shimano elevates the carbon era with a supremely rigid sole that tests at a stiffness of twelve, meaning you'll never doubt whether your efforts are going into the pedals. This level of control and performance is what we've come to expect from Shimano's top-tier road shoes, and what keeps us dedicated to their component line as well.

A unique trait for the RC9-wide is the incorporation of the Anti-twist heel stabilizer that holds the foot in place while performing high-cadence accelerations. Heel control is not an overly focused target of improvement, as modern-day training plans and single-ring gear ratios push normalized cadences higher and higher.

Visual upgrades include more refined venting hole placements and sleeker-looking logo placement, both of which set the RC9-wide as a visual icon in the peloton.

narrower than the 901 version in Wide

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I got the size 41 Wide 902. it was to replace 40 wide 901 that were just the right size, but getting close to getting too small. the new shoes were indeed appropriately longer, but were actually slightly narrower. the carbon sole of the 902 was narrower than the 901. it looks like Shimano might now be using the same platform for their normal and wide versions. that is were the foot pain comes from.

Bit too wide for me

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bit too wide around the toe area maybe it's the newer sphyre version which they made the toe box even wider. i had ordered the 43.5 in a wide but normally i am size 43/US9. I am going to order the Size 43 in regular width and try out.

Painful Shoes and Comp Cyclist Service

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

44 Wide

Purchased these in late Feb. Utilized Shimano wide shoes for the last 5 pair and have previous editions of S-Phyre in road and mountain. Those felt great but the new editions just kept having foot pain after short rides. Chalked it up to new shoes and tried to use on trainer recovery rides until i realized these just wouldnt work like the past S-Phyres. Competitive Cyclist told me that these are popular like my feet are the problem (Im not the only bad review). Searching for new shoes and a new online cycling purchasing option. Buyer beware.

Painfully uncomfortable

I really wanted to like these shoes. After 700+ miles and a lot of pain on both my 5th toes, I gave up. It's money thrown away, pretty much. Do yourself a favor and buy other normally wide shoes. In my case, I ended up buying s-works Ares, and the difference in comfort is like the difference between heaven and purgatory. I really regret buying these S-Phyres.

Great shoes

These are the best fitting shoes out of the box I've had (44 wide). Previously had 43.5 Giro VR90 HV (high volume), which fit very comfortably but over time I came to realize that there was a bit too much room in the toes. The regular VR90 was definitely too skinny. With these shoes I can crank down and adjust the boa dials to my liking as I ride, and when tightened I get zero heel lift while riding. My previous shoes I had to leave loose enough to avoid foot numbness, and I would get heel lift. My feet feel locked in, and comfy at the same time. It's great!

Great Shoe - Wide Was Necessary

Familiarity:

I initially ordered the Specialized S-Works Ares for the stabilization aspect. I found the shoe to be a bit wide, which is ironic, given the need for the wide in this shoe. Anyway, the Ares was okay, I did not like the sock, just didn't do it for me. Then, since they were wide, I bought the regular RC9 and yes, they are that narrow. I generally wear a standard Nike shoe with no issues. I shipped those back and got the wide RC9 which fit perfectly. As another review on here states though, they are still not that wide, so if you generally wear a wide shoe, these may not be for you. The placement of the two boas go around my instep which make them super comfortable. The bottom is very rigid and they even come with inserts for stabilization. Overall, great shoe. Well worth the price, especially if you're doing climbs out of the saddle.

True to Size - 45 / 10.5 Wide

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

The shoe is stiff in the sole but also in the synthetic upper which initially gave me the feeling that the shoe wasn't as wide as expected. However, as the shoe is very slowly breaking in after several months of zwift, the toe box and sides of the shoe feel more roomy as expected. I imagine if it was summer and humid, the shoe would break in quicker.

Not that wide?

I was super excited when this shoe was announced. I had high hopes that this would be the ultimate wide shoe. Sadly, it seems to be the same width as regular versions? In size 45, these shoes measure 94mm at their widest. This is actually 2mm narrower than my long running R320's. I don't have a pair of wide RC901's on hand, but it would be interesting to measure those against the RC902. My feet measure 104mm at their widest, evenly weighted. I double checked the box, shoe tag, insole tag, to make sure I had the right shoes and everything said wide. I called Shimano customer service to try and get some more info on what was changed and the only notes they had said the wide version offered 5-6% more volume. On the positive side, the heel cup is a much better hold than the RC901. The toe box material does have a bit more flex than the rest of the upper. The design and construction of the shoe seem really good, it's just not that wide... If the width does end up working for you, I think it will be a clear upgrade from the RC901.
