RS785 Hydraulic Disc Brake Caliper

Shimano's RS785 Hydraulic Disc Brake Calipers bring the confidence of disc brakes — formerly available only to Di2 electronic groups — to Shimano's 11-speed mechanical groups. The RS785 brake calipers are the grabby mates to the new RS685 11-speed hydraulic mechanical shift levers. For whatever reason, Shimano has decided to forgo model branding on the hydraulic componentry, but the RS685 brakes share a tier with Ultegra's redoubtable mechanical kit.

As with all revolutionary innovations (11-speed, electronic shifting), we admit to harboring some initial skepticism about whether or not disc brakes are worth the fuss; however, there are two undeniable advantages that you'll notice after just minutes riding with disc brakes.

First, they're consistent, regardless of conditions and circumstances. There's no waiting breathlessly for the pads to clear the rim of water or debris before grabbing. There's also no panic when you're caught in the drops and confronted with a sudden obstacle like a darting squirrel or a car in a blind driveway, the brakes will still stop — even if you don't have time to get a full purchase on the lever.

As if disc braking's confident consistency isn't enough, the RS785 calipers also feature Shimano's IceTech technology. This dissipates heat via cooling fins in the braking pads helping the brakes grab faster while also increasing pad life.

Please note that the RS785 Hydraulic Disc Brake Calipers are only compatible with Shimano's ST-RS685 11-speed hydraulic mechanical shift levers.

Two consecutive calipers w leaking seals

I've put it through the wringer

These would be a great choice, but Shimano has seemed to have lost control of quality here. I have had to replace two of these now because of leaking seals. Completely unacceptable.

Okay calipers.. when they don't leak oil

I've used it several times

I ordered 2 for an Ultegra 8000 build with "post" caliper mounts. Unfortunately, 6 months later one started slow-leaking fluid from the o-ring seal at the port between the caliper halves. It's terrible... pads are consistently glazed and loud. At first I thought my college-athlete son contaminated them, etc., but then after multiple frustrating "what's going on" experiences cleaning the pads with alcohol and sanding and ultimately replacing, I did a bit of research on line... this is well known failure mode with this particular Shimano design. ..kind of disappointing and not their best work. In any event, rather than roll the dice here again I swapped in Hope RX4's (which by the way perform MUCH better). I'm returning the one that is defective to Backcountry as a warranty claim and have the eat the cost on the other. So far the process with Backcountry is a bit confusing - their service is generally excellent but they appear in this case to be set up for returning stuff bought by mistake and not for warranty issues - I'm hoping that this sorts the right way.

Suffering is over

I've used it several times

I have been suffering with pad to rotor rubbing since my s-works tarmac was new. Set caliper, bleed, reset pistons re-set calipers. After hard breaking rotor would rub for 10-20 sec. annoying but not the end of the world. Gave up on LBS a year ago. I finally realized inboard piston was sticking. Installed new caliper which includes pads (very cool) and wow silent front brake now. I wish I had done it sooner. I think Shimano has a problem with this part... (A friend’s 785 piston cracked, total failure)


Does this caliper have an external bleed valve nipple like the SLX/XT calipers or the integrated, hidden nipple in the body? A Google image search for RS785 caliper seems to show both types, but the external nipples are much easier to bleed.

Will these calipers work with Shimano ST-RS505 STI 11-speed shifters?


Are these brakes compatable with the ST 785 E shifter

Does this come with the hydraulic hose?

This item does not come with the hydraulic hose.


What replacement pads work with these? The resin pads just wore out too fast for me (140 rotor and 1,500 miles with lots of tech single track). Stepping up to a 160.
