PD-ES600 Pedals
Shimano designs its Explorer PD-ES600 Pedals for the urban cyclists that will inevitably be clipping in and out with great frequency. Its light action spring tension along with a narrow release allows for easy entry and exit making the new rider feel more confident while seasoned riders will appreciate its adjustability. We were surprised to learn that the ES600 is the lightest SPD pedal in Shimano's lineup—Shimano claims a paltry 279g per pair. That's even lighter than the range-topping XTR model. This is mainly due to its single-sided binding which also gives it a clean look on lightweight commuting and road touring bikes. The ES600 pedals will work with any shoe that accepts 2-bolt SPD cleats, however, it's designed to match its RT line of road and city touring shoes.

Just installed and the right pedal is almost impossible to clip in/out, even with maximum float. It?s a nice, light pedal that looks good with my road bike. Going to exchange.

Great Pedals for gravel!

As long as one is not pushing the limits of technical riding, these are fantastic pedals for gravel. The only drawback could be if one is riding terrain which requires lots of unclipping and putting the foot down, as being one sided, clipping back in is not always as fast as it would be with a two sided MTB pedal. Pluses: SPD clip in and release action is the gold standard, and easily adjustable for desired retention. One gets to use a recessed cleat shoe if the need to walk a section comes along. Mud performance much better than road pedals. The platform on these is large, and one can feel the additional support and power transfer (vs MTB XC pedals). Very low stack height, and higher ground clearance than double sided MTB pedals-great for modern low BB gravel bikes. Lightweight vs any MTB pedals. And, very affordable. Super smooth bearings, as is normally the case with all Shimano pedals. BTW, for those marginal gains types, Boca Bearings makes a relatively affordable ceramic ball upgrade which will work with these pedals. I actually use road shoes, with an adapter for SPD cleats with these, for a really lightweight and stiff setup (Giro Empire SLX)-with the adapter the road shoes walk well enough to get through the occasional unrideable section. Only a complete road pedal set up would be more efficient and lighter, for gravel rides which are known to be dry, and completely non-technical (no walking), a Dura Ace pedal and road shoe would be my choice-but for most gravel rides, these are perfect.
