Why We Like The Dura-Ace 9100 C40 Carbon Road Wheelset

Shimano's Dura-Ace 9100 C40 Carbon Wheelset brings an aesthetic update to pair perfectly with the 9100 groupset and carries over the speedy stability we've come to expect from Dura-Ace wheels. As with its C35 predecessor, the C40's weight is centered at the hubs to reduce rim and rotational weight so it kicks up to speed fast. Combine that snappiness with a 35mm rim depth and you get the ideal balance of lightweight responsiveness and aerodynamic speed to manage a wide variety of terrain.

The rim's construction, which is ultimately responsible for the wheelset's devoted following, remains the same. It involves an alloy body that's extruded and machined to thin the walls down to an almost two-dimensional 0.6mm wall thickness—about half of the typical alloy rim wall thickness of 1 to 1.3mm. This obviously reduces weight to a minimum, but it also means the overall structure is less sound, so Shimano buttresses the rim with a jealously guarded carbon laminate process. The only information that the brand is willing to divulge about this process is that phosphoric acid is used to anodize the alloy, and then variable carbon layers are fused to it in order to boost its structural integrity without undoing the weight gains made during the milling process.

The result is a lightweight rim that's as durable and radially comfortable as alloy but still manages to approach the weight and drive stiffness of carbon. It also features an alloy brake track, which means it doesn't sacrifice stopping power in pursuit of weight reduction and also doesn't carry the risk of being distorted by internal pressure from the tube when it heats up during long, hot descents. Altogether, each component of the wheel has been designed as a symbiotic system for the ultimate in aerodynamics, efficiency, and pure speed.

  • A versatile wheelset that balances weight and aerodynamics
  • Machined aluminum with carbon laminate drops grams, not stiffness
  • Aerodynamic mid-depth rims hold speed without impeding climbing
  • Durable titanium freehub body reduces weight
  • Wide hub flanges boost wheel stiffness
  • Aluminum brake track provides reliable braking across conditions

Amazing wheels, grab them while you can

Have ridden a set of these for the past 3.5yr (probably >10,000mi) without any problems. Haven't needed trueing or bearing adjustment (overdue for re-lubing!). Bombproof wheels that strike a nice balance between reasonably light weight (set is only about 60g heavier than C24's) and basic aero drag reduction (35mm deep). I just ordered another set because it's unclear how much longer they will be available.

Excellent wheels! Came perfectly true. Love the fact that they came with 1.85mm spacer for the cassette hub, as well as spoke wrenches, wheel bags (a nice touch). They ride fast, smooth and seem agile. I would highly recommend them to anyone-especially if you don't want to change your brake pads or drivetrain.

Great wheels, not so for the skewers

I've put it through the wringer

Purchase the Shimano Dura-Ace 9100 C40 Carbon Road Clincher wheelset for my 2016 Colnago C60, after riding it for over 1000 miles I can say this wheels are great and very responsive, but the skewer arms are off center, creating a clearance problems on the chain stay, I can only able to lock the wheel with the skewer arm at horizontal or lower position hence 4 stars!

No problem here

Dura-Ace skewers work fine for me on all my bikes. And unsure why having the arm at or below horizontal would be a problem, I'd simply aim it horizontal, pointing forward tucked under the chainstay.

Rider weight limit? Flexing for heavier riders?

Which version of the Clincher is this? WH-R9100-C40-CL or WH-R9170-C40-TL? Regular Clincher or Tubeless?

Is this description for the c35 or c40? Looks like it's for the former
