Description

XTR BB94 Bottom Bracket

Along with BB86, this Shimano XTR BB94 Bottom Bracket is part of the new pressfit standard, and is compatible with frames that have a BB92 bottom bracket shell. The reason it's called a BB94 is because of a recent round of upgrades to the bearings, but it is still built to fit the BB92 standard of bottom bracket shells. The BB92 standard offers frame designers a little more room for new designs in seat/down tubes and rear suspension layout. Where a typical mountain bike has a 68 or 73mm bottom bracket shell width, a BB92 equipped bike has a shell that measures 91.5mm wide. A BB92 shell lacks internal threads and has a 41mm inside diameter.

The BB94 model is made to press right into your bike, and mates with Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets. This bottom bracket comes with two steel cartridge bearings pressed into composite cups, which increase the outside diameter of the assembly to 41mm to match the internal diameter of the frame's bottom bracket shell. A 1.75mm thick outer lip provides a positive stop for the cups when you press them into place. Shimano includes its standard plastic o-ringed inner sleeve to protect against water damage should it find a way inside your frame, and a black plastic dust shield snaps into the inner race of each bearing for an extra layer of protection against the hardships of the trail.

This and any other level 3 bearing bottom bracket will work but is is extremely basic and ads quite a bit of friction to your drive train. The level 5 bearing bottom brackets, for just a few dollars more are so much better. This one works, perfectly but you do so much more work for the same effort it is truly sad. If all you have is $40 bucks, this one works as good as any low end, super basic bottom bracket but you will pay for this choice in hard work. I hope this helps a lot of you decide without spending money on a product that is just too old school for even casual riding by todays standards. It works and is smooth, just a lot of friction. Install it, take off your chain and spin your crankset, you will see 3 revolutions. Replace it with a slightly better, level 5 bb bracket and experience 12-15 revolutions with the same effort. WOW is right. Good quality, and its resistance doesn't get better after it breaks in. Technology is too old for today, maybe a new rider can't tell the difference or good if you just take short rides.

Smooth, Nice, Cheap

Great bottom bracket. Great bearings and it is light. Go to.

Great bb thus far

Have maybe ~500 miles on this BB on a hardtail. No creaking, installs easy, rotates smoothly. Can't go wrong with the price or the quality.

Great BB

Nothing too exciting in a BB, but it sure is needed on the bike. Used this for my recent SB6 build. Great bike needs a great BB

It Works

This is the bottom bracket you need to pair your Shimano crank to your press fit bb. Super easy to install and the bearings held up for over a year before they started feeling gritty after riding in variable conditions.

Simple and Effective

The PF BB92 bottom bracket is intended for mountain bikes (compared to the PF BB86 made for road bikes). It's super easy to install since it's a press fit. The bearings quality is good, longevity dependent on riding conditions. Wet or sandy conditions will result in shorter bearing life. Some things to consider: If you're installing in a carbon frame you might want to use carbon specific grease. It will reduce noise found later on down the trail. Be particularly careful with the inner races during the install, they crack easily if misaligned in your press or if you decide to take action with a hammer. Pay attention to the instructions regarding how to orient any spacers, your bike design and front derailleur type impact the BB spacing.
