Description

The Evolution has arrived.

Knowing that pressure at the perineum region is no way to roll, Selle SMP set out to address this issue with its SMP4BIKE saddles. The Evolution is a minimal design that falls right into this category, as it relies on the Italian brand's innovative shape to keep you comfortable, supported, and pressure-free while riding and racing.

The Evolution is best suited for cyclists with average and narrow pelvises, as it features a thinner profile with less padding than other models in this range. At the nose, there's the characteristic "beak" shape designed to provide a flat base while sitting, without excessive pressure on the genital area. SMP's pronounced central channel was also incorporated, which further reduces pressure on the pudendal nerve and surrounding soft tissue. The back of the saddle is raised for an enhanced seated pedaling position, where body weight is divided between the rear and lower part of the ischial tuberosity region. This shape also helps reduce overall pressure on the coccyx while riding over rough surfaces.

The saddle's foam elastomer padding gets wrapped in leather for the black version and a durable Lorica microfiber in the colored version. Its durable nylon/carbon composite shell rides on stainless steel rails, ensuring a secure perch that'll hold up for both road and mountain applications.

The Selle SMP Evolution is available in one size (266 x 129mm) and in the colors Black, Red, and White. It is handmade in Italy and has a claimed weight of 230 grams.

Comfort at last

Solid, comfortable contact with sit bones. No more pain in the "soft tissues". Comfort for multiple hours in the saddle.

Favorite saddle for years

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I just bought my 3rd Selle SMP Evolution saddle, and I am definitely a big fan. The design relieves pressure, but I still find it to be comfortable in a wide variety of positions. In particularly excels as you rotate your hips forward into more of a TT position. No more numbness.

The construction quality is also very good. I still ride one that has been everywhere with me since 2008.

Gorgeous saddle. Wish it worked for me

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This Concorde beaked saddle is very finely crafted. The leather, stitching, shape, and rails are wonderfully executed. The quality and concern for detail were what I would expect from a very pricey leather attach case.

I know the radical shape solves the perineal pressure problem for many male riders. It seemed to work for me too, on the trainer. On the road, the reduced surface area edges lit up my tender undercarriage as is always a risk for saddle designs that sharply reduce surface area. The remaining surface has to put more pressure on something. That's why an anatomical saddle can end up hurting much more if it doesn't suit you.

The beaked nose deserves special mention. Most split nose saddle designs also chop the nose quite short. SMP chose to bend their nose but not alter its length. Pedal strokes feel just a touch more mechanically efficient and handling is improved as well because the bent nose between your legs can still be used to guide the bike. The "bent nose" idea works quite well. If you are looking at perineum pressure reducing saddles, this one deserves consideration.

The saddle is very well made, beautiful, and functionally innovative. I would be riding it if my body hadn't rejected the idea.
