Description

Drakon

As one the newest saddles to join the Selle SMP lineup, the Drakon carries the brand's commitment to addressing the all-too-common issue of pressure at the perineum region. It relies on Selle SMP's innovative design to keep you supported and pressure-free, which means more overall comfort while riding.

Residing between the Lite 209 and Dynamic, the Drakon is best suited for cyclists with medium-width pelvises, as it features a moderate profile and a fairly minimal amount of padding. At the nose, there's the characteristic "beak" shape designed to provide a flat base while sitting, without excessive pressure on the genital area. SMP's pronounced central channel was also incorporated, which further reduces pressure on the pudendal nerve and surrounding soft tissue. The back of the saddle is raised for an enhanced seated pedaling position, where body weight is divided between the rear and lower part of the ischial tuberosity region. This shape also helps reduce overall pressure on the coccyx while riding over rough surfaces.

The saddle's foam elastomer padding gets wrapped in leather for the black version and a durable Lorica microfiber in the colored version. Its durable nylon/carbon composite shell rides on stainless steel rails, ensuring a secure perch that'll hold up for both road and mountain applications.

The Selle SMP Drakon is available in one size (276 x 138mm) and in the colors Black and White. It is handmade in Italy and has a claimed weight of 285 grams.

    Works for the ladies too!

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

There are many reasons for females to consider a "women's specific saddle". Anatomy is just different. However, there are many saddles that will work across genders. I believe the Drakon to be one of them. The large range of fore/aft and nose up/down allows each individual to dial in what works for them. I rode with an allen wrench easily accessible for the first few rides to make on-the-fly adjustments until I found the best position for me. I have this saddle on my bikepacking/gravel/commuting bike and have found the Drakon to work great in all those applications. SMP's saddles are shaped similarly. What will distinguish them is the amount of padding and the width. The Drakon has a medium amount of padding and a width of 138mm. Shoot me an email at kharker@backcountry.com if you want to talk about this saddle or any others!

    No more numbness!

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Like other reviewers have said, saddle choice is often a personal thing and something that works for one person may not work for another. That being said, this thing works great for me. Most men will agree, any sort of pain or numbness in the gentleman's area is not only a bad thing, but can also be pretty terrifying. The wide cutout of this saddle combined with the drop-nose completely alleviates the numbness I was experiencing before, and it has enough padding to prevent sit bone pain on longer mountain bike rides. It is a bit heavy which is why I only gave it 4 stars, but I will definitely be keeping it and moving it from bike to bike, I think I've found my saddle.

    Sitting on a Dream

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

The SMP Drakon is a dream to sit on. Significant improvement over my prior Specialized Romin. No more numb-ness on long rides or climbs. The sit bones stay engaged and the mid-saddle SMP swoop does it's job to maintain blood flow. Bonus, it's a great looking saddle!

    sweet perineal relief

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

Saddles are a highly personal item, so I can't say whether this saddle will work for you, but I can tell you what it's good for. If you've experienced pressure on your perineum, numbness on your genitals, or even rubbing on the outer edge of your saddle, this one could be worth a shot. While the saddle does afford great benefits in relieving sensitive areas, it does really only afford one riding position e.g. shifting myself forward on a long climb felt pretty weird. Like any saddle, this isn't for everyone, but it's a great solution to a few problems that no rider really wants to deal with.

    Happy fanny!

I've been riding 'flat' saddles all my biking life but was encouraged to try one of these by a friend who rides a Dynamic model. In the 'Forma' series you have the Forma which is essentially the shell with a leather cover, then three additional models using the same shell with increasing amounts (thicknesses) of padding, the Dynamic, the Drakon, and the Lite 209. I test rode a Dynamic and liked very much. I decided to order the Drakon and get a little more padding. What I found is that as you increase padding you increase the size of the saddle. As I have ridden the saddle a few times, I cannot return for the Dynamic which is what I prefer. My mistake. Yet, it is still so much more comfortable than any of my previous saddles which include models of Prologo, and Fizik. Takes a little more work to set up than most. I would suggest that this saddle is one you should test before buying. Quality of materials and craftsmanship look very good. Black is covered with real leather.

    Found my pelvic match!

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

ive tried numerous saddles including fizik line up. After 60 + miles experienced numbness. Finally decided smp saddle for urologic health reasons. Composit, evolution a bit too narrow for me. If your considering smp saddles, start with Drakon you can't go wrong.Cheers!

Is this the 2013 or 2014 version? Also, do you know what the difference is between the two model years? I can't seem to find anything online, so my guess is that it is completely possible there is no difference. Thanks!

Connor, this is actually a 2015 model but your guess is correct in that there is no difference in the model years.

Well crafted but not for all seat rails

    Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

This is a very well crafted saddle, as expected for a high end Italian made good, BUT...be aware that there are some very specific requirements for the seat rail clamps, so not all post will work with these saddles. Selle SMP has the manuals on their website so check them out in advance. I got a great price and fast shipping from Competitive Cyclist but didn't realize this product isn't listed as compatible with my seat mast system so had to return it.
