Different with a purpose.

"Shrinking and pinking" used to be a viable way to make women's cycling gear, but times have changed, and products like the Selle Italia SLR Lady Flow Women's Saddle is proof that the cycling world is taking ladies, and their gear, seriously.

That said, the Lady Flow takes some cues from the classic SLR Flow, such as its 275mm length, Lorica artificial leather cover, and the surgical grade Ti 316 rails. It shares the carbon-injected nylon shell, too, which provides a killer blend of stiffness, support, and comfort, so you can ride hard without suffering excessively.

The rest of the Lady Flow, though, has been redesigned. The rear wings are 135mm in width, four millimeters wider than the men's saddle, to comfortably fit female sit bones, and the nose is also slightly wider and designed to take your weight off sensitive pressure points. There's also slightly thicker padding in key areas to reduce vibration and increase comfort, but the Lady Flow is still a decidedly minimalist offering. Minimal doesn't mean wimpy, though—the Lady Flow is tough enough that Selle Italia rates it for road, cyclocross, and mountain bike use, so you can pick up three and stick them on all of your rides.

Saddle #5 wins!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I tried 6 saddles and this one was number 5, and the winner! I almost kicked myself when I took it off my bike because I knew it was in the right position and would be hard to get just right again but I had to make use I didn’t Love # 6. I love this saddle now, but it took a while to get in the perfect position, and sometimes I wish it had a tiny bit longer cutout in the front but now that I have it in that right spot it really is great. I can get in my drops and ride all day on my hoods without pain. I am the type of rider who has a low position on a road bike and lots af flexibility so if you are like this, this saddle may work well for you. It is a little on the hard side so after a few hours on the trainer it can get uncomfortable but that is the trainer with pretty much any saddle.

Not for me.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My old Fizik Arione had seen better days and so I decided to look for a new saddle. My Arione (men's) always had caused chafing in front and I was thinking a women's specific saddle might alleviate that problem. As a serious road cyclist, I wanted something lightweight, firm, comfortable while on the nose, and yes, it had to look good too. I selected the Lady Flow and was excited to try it out. My first ride went well, with absolutely no chafing - even while riding in the drops or on the nose. Loved it! The problems appeared after riding several days in a row. My sit bones were so sore that I literally developed swollen tissue and bruising. Now, I don't mind a hard saddle - actually prefer it - but this saddle just hits my sit bone wrong. My sit bones end up compressing the limited saddle padding and ride on the inner rim of the cutout, which is hard plastic. Ouch! I wanted to love this sexy saddle, but simply can't ride it daily- or every other day for that matter. If you have wider sit bones, whatever that means, and you like a hard racing saddle, I would definitely recommend this saddle. It's just not right for me.
