Why We Like The Aerothan TPU Road Tube

The Aerothan TPU Road Tube provides you with a smooth, stable, and fast ride. It weighs in at around 40% less than a similar Schwalbe tube, yet offers the highest possible level of puncture protection as the TPU material itself keeps sudden air loss to a minimum. With such low rolling resistance, the Aerothan TPU Road Tube offers a high-quality, fast ride.

Wow, unreal (in a bad way)

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Look, I put these tubes in for a race, and they were a dream. Very light, and they rode unbelievably, I couldn't believe what a difference they made in the ride. Then a couple rides later I get TWO PINCH FLATS IN THE SAME RIDE 15 miles apart, leaves me with a 2 mile walk of shame. That was just the beginning. I can only use their special patches, right? For TWO MONTHS I look everywhere, nobody has them in stock. TWO MONTHS! So I finally give in last week and buy the Park Tools glueless patches. They actually seem to work pretty well, but I'll never know because as I'm getting everything repaired and ready to ride, my valve literally BLOWS OUT of the plastic (yes, plastic) valve stem. Threads are ruined, won't hold a valve or an extender in the stem. Trash. Waste of money. Don't think I'll waste my time trying to install the other aerothan that I repaired.

Mixed feeling.

I got exactly 1188 miles on the tube mounted in the front wheel. Today the tube went flat after a fast 51mph steep descent where I had to come to a very quick stop because the road ends. I typically air up the pressure to 85psi in my 25mm R3 tires before every ride. Today I didn't do that and I can only guess how much pressure was in it since it's common for the tire to lose about 10 to 15 psi per day. I hit the disc brakes hard and I felt a bump that felt like a pinch and I rolled about another 40 yards before the tire was completely flat. There was nothing on the road that I could see so it could only be from low pressure and all the weight forward from braking that may have resulted in a pinch flat. I looked at the tube and you can clearly see two little snake bite marks. Schwalbe claims you can patch these but I have read that patches won't stick. If that is true then these tubes would not be worth the asking price. Depending on the hole I can patch a common tube several times and get a lot more miles. I still have 2 more Aerothan tubes so I will continue on and see if the next tube will last until it's time for a new tire. I would like to see a tube last as long as a tire before replacing it. If I could patch it then I could replace it when I install a new tire. This doesn't seem like it's going to be the case. No way to predict what kind of mileage you are going to get from the Aerothan tubes but I'm already at $60 in the same tire when normally I would have only spent $10 to $12 dollars.

They work

I have had great success using the Tubolito tubes, which ride nicely, are very light, are almost freakish in their ability to hold air and never get punctured. Just for kicks I tried these *very* similar tubes on a second, 'back up' bike for commuting and they work exactly the same, but the stem is black and not orange like the Tubolitos. No complaints.
