Why We Like The H3 Direct Drive Smart Trainer

When the weather sours and it’s time to take training indoors, the last thing we want to hear is the steady whirr of a trainer for three months. The H3 Direct Drive Smart Trainer is the quietest ever made by Saris, besting the already library-quiet H2. Less noise from the trainer means you can focus on the ride—or just catch the finer plot details of the latest binge-worthy TV show while grinding base miles.

If you’re taking a purist approach to training, the H3’s Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity pairs readily to apps like Zwift, Rouvy, Trainer Road and others to get the most out of your indoor hours. Built-in cadence, speed, and power sensors eliminate the need for additional setup steps or widgets. The robust aluminum body and precision-balanced flywheel can withstand your punchiest workouts, with a maximum of 2000 watts and a maximum simulated grade of 20%. An intelligently designed internal cooling system keeps the H3 accurate through the toughest efforts.

  • A quiet, interactive trainer for building fitness this winter
  • Direct drive design eliminates tire wear and wheel slip issues
  • Folding legs provide a stable base and convenient storing options
  • Compatible with wide range of bike frames with included end cap adapters
  • Headless mode allows you to ride without app connection

Close to riding on the road

After a cycling accident I purchased this trainer so I can safely ride indoors. However, nothing beats riding outdoors, but this direct drive smart trainer is the next best thing. The resistance changes as the terrain changes creating a realistic experience. The road feel is very good because the flywheel is heavy, and the Saris H3 is very stable to ride. I am using the Rouvy app which allows you to ride on real roads with real scenery. This also adds to the realistic feel. I have been using the Saris H3 for several weeks with no problems.

Poor quality and terrible support

I've put it through the wringer

I have had my H3 for less than a year. It developed a terrible clicking sound (it would wake my family from sleep). I reached out to Saris and heard nothing for nearly 3 months. When I finally hear something, they sent directions on how to fix it myself. The images in the directions show, in my opinion, that the inner-workings of my trainer were installed incorrectly (in the photo I have attached and provided to Saris, you can see my tension spring on my trainer is in a different location than their photo). I responded back to Saris. Saris said their pictures were from an older model. Without getting into more of the details, I do not see how their explanation makes any sense. Tensioning the spring is nearly impossible because you cannot use a torque wrench. With so many other options on the market, I would stay away from Saris.

Poor customer service

I've put it through the wringer
True to size

I love my H3 trainer, and to be very clear competitive cyclist is great. But Saris support is non existent. My power supply failed under warranty. I called 3 times and e-mailed 3 times. So far no responce from Saris for 3 weeks. The bike forums show a trend of bad or no service from Saris. I'd pick a different brand. I hate poor customer service. SARIS exemplifies POOR service. I rate the trainer and competitive cyclist 5 stars. Saris service 0 zero 0

Does this trainer has the capability of simulate the road like the Tacx?

No, but honestly, I've tried the feature on the Neo 2 and it didn't amaze me.

Can this be made to work with Campagnolo cassettes?

Yes, but you have to buy a new freehub.

Great for TrainerRoad

I've used it several times

Solid construction, consistent power readings. Great responsiveness in erg mode makes the H3 ideal for use with TrainerRoad. If you do have any issues, Saris customer support is great to work with.

This sounds like a BS review, based on the 2 previous reviews.

Not sure if this is a BS review. It was the first review and was pre covid. I have noticed customer service at many places has went down hill since covid hit. Many companies are working with skeleton crews and trying to work from home. I see it at my job when we try to order stuff for customers or ourselves.
