It's always colder off the back.

Every year in late April, at least one Anglophone cycling publication is compelled to remind us all of Hampsten's hellish Giro win. The Gavia, the snow, the repurposed goggles and ski gloves—you don't even need to check the calendar. Just seeing those iconic images lets you know the Giro is almost upon us. While Hampsten won the stage (and later the race) off the front, Santini's Maglia Nera Merino Wool Long-Sleeve Jersey celebrates life off the back in two ways.

First, it's an homage to the historical Maglia Nera competition, which added a macabre touch to the Giro's mid-century editions by dressing the GC caboose in black. Second, the jersey's merino wool blend is a reminder that conditions like the '88 Gavia are always a lot more brutal when you're off the back and, rather than competing for a win, just struggling to finish. Winning has a way of taking the sting out of the cold, so it's appropriate that this version of the Maglia Nera is insulated for use in temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the low 50s, Fahrenheit. On cold days when you're off the back of a late-season hill climb or out of the running for upgrade points in an early spring circuit race, that soft warmth carries a note of consolation.

The jersey's button-closed pockets, ribbed cuffs, and tall collar are nods to the look of cycling clothing during the Maglia Nera's brief official tenure between 1946 and '51, an era dominated by wool kit and the limitations thereof. That was half a decade ago, though, and Santini updates the classic material with a synthetic infusion of nylon, which boosts durability and helps the merino base hold its shape. We're happy to report that this update doesn't hamper wool's insulating properties. And that's a good thing—after all, the current crop of hollow-fiber synthetics are all largely based on the natural structure of merino, which traps countless micropockets of insulating air to hold heat against the external chill.
