Cool shorts for long climbs.

You'll likely appreciate the aerodynamic properties of Santini's fit-like-a-glove BCOOL Bib Shorts while spinning on the flats or powering through rollers, but it's the long, slow, hot grind up your local HC climb that will really show you the plus side of these shorts. Everything from the compressive fabric to the barely-there chamois contribute to a comfortable ride on a hot day. Now if only those eight miles at nine percent of Little Cottonwood Canyon — our local HC climb — would be as forgiving.

The shorts are made from a synthetic blend Santini is calling Lycra Newport. In this case, Lycra translates to stretchy and accommodating and Newport translates to a gentle compression that helps reduce the muscle fatigue caused by miles and miles of jostling oscillation caused by road noise and general saddle-bound movement. The side panels incorporate carbon particles in order to improve thermo-regulation and protect against UV rays. Carbon also eliminates odors, so you may want to pick these up as a gift for your riding buddy who doesn't wash his kit between rides. The shorts are finished with anti-slip Lycra leg bands that don't pinch or restrict movement, and the elastic bibs serve as a frame for breathable panels of mesh.

Of all the construction elements of the BCOOL Bib Shorts, Santini may actually be proudest of the MIG3 chamois — and for good reason. The Italian manufacturer boasts that the MIG3 is the lightest gel chamois in its line. While we haven't torn it out of the shorts to weigh it, the mesh and gel construction certainly feels both light and non-restrictive while still offering the protection we expect from a premium chamois. The usual perineal channel and sit-bone support make an appearance, and the microfiber cover is soft, stretchy, and antimicrobial.

Good fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: xl

Did a few rides in these and really liked the fit. The only thing I didnt like was the chamois. It is very thin and seemingly hard. It does not fit me and where my sit bones meet the seat. They are great bibs but I get uncomfortable about 1.5 hours into a ride. I am 6'4" 180lbs and ordered the XL. It fit fine for my build. Again I just dont like the chamois

Tried these last fall and again this year. Fit feels good but the straps fold over and become more like cords. Nip chafers. Many jerseys won't cover the low front of these. And if you like giggling tweens whilst stopping for a drink, the small viewing window right at the crotch works wonders!
I have already moved these to the back of the closet.
