Santa Cruz Stigmata CC CX1 complete cyclocross bike is just as happy hopping barriers on Saturday and as it is doing multi-hour all-road adventures on Sunday. The beautiful carbon frame is built up with a simple 1x drivetrain with a wide gear range, powerful hydraulic disc brakes, and generous tire clearance. This Stigmata can toe the line at any CX race, grind some gravel, and trade out pulls on the Tuesday nighter with a simple tire swap.

The Stigmata started life as a cyclocross race weapon, but as the season ended, people began to take note of the bike's versatility on other terrains. One feature that is quickly appreciated is the massive tire clearance. Turns out, when you factor in space for muddy 'cross tires, the extra room works well for larger gravel rubber too. The trend to lower bottom bracket heights in 'cross, offering a lower center of gravity and better cornering, is also a benefit on gravel as it offers better stability at speed. Provisions for two full-size bottles in the front triangle continue the list of features that make this bike such an all-around favorite.

Santa Cruz calls this bike "the 'cross bike for mountain bikers" and we tend to agree. If you are a dyed-in-the-wool roadie, this won't replace your dedicated road bike, but if you are more of a singletrack junkie that wants a do-it-all drop bar bike that can dabble in gravel racing, mellow trails, and road riding, this is your bike. Skinny seatstays and seattube that houses a 27.2mm post quell road chatter, while the large downtube and oversized PF30 bottom bracket shell provide plenty of stiffness to propel you forward with any input to the pedals. Short chainstays and seat and head angles don't deviate from the norm seen on dedicated CX bikes and keep things agile for negotiating hairpins and off cambers. Swap out the tires to some more road appropriate rubber, and you won't have any trouble keeping up with the shaved leg set on fast group rides.

This build comes with Maxxis Rambler tires in a 40mm width that offers plenty of flotation over gravel roads. What we like most about rolling around on this setup is it encourages us to take any opportunity on road or trail we see on our ride, feeding our sense of adventure. We love that we can ride from the house and shortly be off the beaten path and away from cars and the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The Stigmata is built using Santa Cruz’s top tier CC carbon fiber construction, which is famous in mountain bike circles for its class-leading durability. Utilizing premium raw materials, Santa Cruz is able to construct its CC level frames into extremely lightweight structures that maintain phenomenal impact resistance, exceptional stiffness, and compliance for a smooth ride. Santa Cruz's experience with carbon fiber allows for this expertise and the refined ride is the result. What's most remarkable is just how durable these frames are while coming in so light.

This build gets SRAM Force CX1, which represents excellent value and reliability. The drivetrain has plenty of range and forgoes the front shifter and derailleur saving weight and eliminating the possibility of a mechanical while you are miles away from home. Hydraulic disc brakes offer controlled, powerful braking in all conditions. A Zipp Service Course cockpit is plenty durable and ensures that your contact points and comfortable for the long miles.

  • Cyclocross race bike or gravel machine, choose both
  • Geometry provides excellent handling in varied conditions
  • Carbon CC frame is lightweight and durable
  • SRAM one-by drivetrain and disc brakes for reliability
  • Hand-built wheels ensure long-term durability

Quick question about sizing—this is my first CX bike, and I’m between sizes. I’ve owned a XL Nomad 3 and am currently on a size L Evil Insurgent with a 50mm stem—the Nomad always felt a little big but the Insurgent somehow feels perfect. My road bike is a Lynskey R230 size L with a 100mm stem. By my height and inseam the recommended size is the 60, but I’m concerned that would be too big. Any thoughts?

Hey Peter, would definitely go with a 58cm in that case. A 60cm would be too large.

Pictured is an Easton 1X crankset...is this the crankset offered as stock, or is it an upgrade?

Hey Greg,

Seems to be a copy editing error, the bike is actually equipped with Force 1 and not Rival 22. So it will include the Easton cranks as stock.
