Shine bright.

While rolling through the parking area of nearly any American cross race venue over the past year, we'd inevitably encounter at least one (often times many) eye-catchingly bright, ENVE-bedecked Stigmata. For 2017, Santa Cruz Bicycles brings back its standout Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset with updated colorways to fuel your 'cross racing and all-road dreams. Underneath the aesthetics, this version of the Stigmata sports Santa Cruz's top-shelf CC carbon lay-up, which delivers robust strength and stiffness alongside lightweight efficiency. Up front, the Stigmata CC Cyclocross Fork uses this same high-end carbon for uncompromising stiffness and strength when you need it most.

A modern geometry places the Stigmata Carbon CC solidly in contention with the herd of high-end 'cross bike options, with a 72-degree head tube angle, 73.5-degree seat tube angle (based on 56cm model), and a 69mm bottom bracket drop that falls neatly between Euro-'cross high and road-racing low and caters well to American-style cross courses. Its stable geometry also allows for versatility beyond barriers and tape fencing; it's just as confident and composed grinding out long stretches on gravel back roads or exploring light-duty singletrack.

While cross racing imposes limitations on tire width, venturing off the course opens up myriad possibilities of plush. With this in mind, Santa Crux designs the Stigmata to accept tires up to 41mm in width, allowing you to drop the pressure (especially when running tubeless) for a more comfortable ride through rougher terrain. Conversely, toss on a set of skinny road tires to throw down on the local group ride or noodle through the city on a Sunday social.

Thru-axles at the front and rear add poise and confidence for better tracking across rutted-out backroads and gravel-strewn surfaces. Add in the ability to accept 140 or 160mm discs, and you get a sprightly ride that also slows down in a hurry when you need it to, no matter how mucky or wet the conditions. Internal cable routing cleans things up by running the brake and shifting cables through the fork, providing a bit of added cable protection and a much more pleasing aesthetic than frames with external routing. For riders worried about future compatibility, the Stigmata's ability to run electronic drivetrains keeps it relevant in today's ever-shifting landscape of technology.

  • A frameset that's equal parts 'cross racer and gravel grinder
  • Santa Cruz's high-grade CC carbon with versatile geometry
  • Internal cable routing maintains clean lines
  • Front and rear thru-axles provide responsive ride
  • Accommodates up to 41mm tires
  • Accepts 140 or 160mm disc rotors
  • Compatible with mechanical and electronic drivetrains

Sexy Stigmata!!!!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I cannot say enough about this bike. I wanted one bike to do all things road, cross and light trail. The Stigmata nails it on every area!
I now have 2,500 miles on this bike with 2 centuries, 3 cross races, a bunch of road miles and some killer trail rides. I have not found a negative to the bike yet.
On road it is fast, stable and peppy when out of the saddle. The cross races this bike gobbled up the twisties and made me confident on all the sloppy corners and rough terrain. I have even grabbed this instead of my mountain bike for some of the lighter trail rides. It is just that fun to be on!
I am 5'11 and the 56cm fits me perfectly.

Sexy Stigmata!!!!!

Changing it up.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm an old-school roadie. That means that I tend to favor lugged steel frames, Campagnolo components, and tubular wheels ... so it's going to take something special to get me to make a change.

The Stigmata is my first carbon bike, my first disc brake bike, my first tubeless wheels, and my first Shimano (I got mine built with an Ultegra 2x group) bike in over 20 years.

Initial impressions? Oh my freaking heck (that's a Utah-ism for those who don't know), this is going to be an amazing bike to ride ... on road, and especially on gravel once the snow melts. Gotta prep for the Crusher this July ... my hope is to finally finish as a rider, not as a writer.

So why only 4 stars you ask? Because I don't have enough experience on the bike to definitively give it 5 stars, but I'm pretty sure that once I've got some more miles on it, that rating will go up.

Update 4/15/17 - Five Stars

Yup ... this bike is a potential quiver killer for me. If I had to limit myself to just ONE bike, well ... umm ... the Campy-equipped Richard Sachs would win out (I am never getting rid of that bike); but if I got to keep TWO bikes, the Stigmata would definitely be the second one, full stop. Don't even need to think about that one.

I even like the Shimano Ultegra components, which is hard to admit as a Campy guy. Shifting is spot-on, and in many ways I'm a disc brake believer now. I was worried about the disc brakes being grabby compared to all my rim brakes, but so far, I feel like I still have good modulation when I'm just trying to control my speed going into a bend, but have all the stopping power I need when I need to grab the brakes.

I did get a second set of wheels to mount with road tires and a road cassette, so it's a lot easier when I want to switch it up from 40mm on gravel to 25mm on pavement; the bike does indeed perform just as well on pavement as any of my dedicated road bikes.

TL;DR -- New bike, new tech, love it.
