Reserve 30 I9 Boost Wheelset
Throughout the design, engineering, and testing process of the Reserve Wheels, Santa Cruz's goal all along was to create a strong, high-quality carbon wheel that could actually hold up to aggressive riding—something that shot down the skeptics claims about the long-term durability of carbon rims. We'd say they've succeeded, which is why we're happy to offer the Reserve 30 I9 Boost Wheelset. Featuring a burly carbon rim laced up to Industry Nine's latest and greatest Hydra hubs, these wheels are ready to roll, smash, or slash through the most demanding terrain you can find. They're an ideal companion for your aggressive trail or enduro rig, and the 30mm rim width mates perfectly to 2.3 - 2.6in tires. Additionally, Santa Cruz offers a lifetime warranty on the rims, just like their frames.
Instead of replicating the pothole-like impact test used on traditional carbon hoops, Santa Cruz developed their own testing protocol that simulates one-sided impacts that normally occur when a rider lands on a square, protruding rock. As they tested the leading manufacturer's carbon wheels, it became apparent that most carbon wheels not only broke along the bead, but they also failed along the spoke nipple interface due to the drastic increase in spoke tension as the wheel flexed upon impact.
To address these concerns, Santa Cruz reinforced the spoke holes with square-shaped reinforcements that you can see looking at the rim. This design optimizes compression of the carbon fiber while being molded, and ensures the reinforcements are perfectly placed. Santa Cruz then beefed up the rim bead, opting for a hookless design that better withstands impacts and offers hassle-free tubeless setup. As we mentioned earlier, Santa Cruz is confident enough in their design to offer a lifetime warranty, which applies as long as you break them while riding, and not due to a transport issue.
At the center, the Reserve carbon rims are laced to I9's all-new Hydra hubs. The Hydra hubs are an update to Industry Nine's previous drive system, and once you have a look at the internals, you'll begin to spot the differences. You'll notice a similar pawl layout in the Torch system with the meticulous CNC machining the brand is known for. Like the old Torch hub, the Hydra features a 6 pawl design, however, the drive ring gets a whopping 115 teeth, as opposed to the 60-tooth design used in the Torch, creating an impressive 690 points of engagement, nearly six-times quicker than its predecessor! These 690 points of contact translate directly to the snappiest hubs we've ever seen, with only 0.52-degrees of engagement, meaning you'll be getting on the gas instantly and solidly. You'll be glad to know that the new hubs maintain the same simple maintenance procedures too, so for those of you who like to tinker on your own bikes at home, you don't need any proprietary tools.
