Why We Like The Megatower Carbon GX Eagle Mountain Bike

Big wheels big travel—that's what the Megatower's all about. So for those of us seeking a race-worthy, long-travel enduro sled that won't break the bank, this GX build provides the self-sponsoring racer a weapon to tame double black diamond runs with enough let in the bank to fund entry fees and epic riding vacations. The bike's lower-link driven VPP suspension provides levels of traction and confidence that's hard to match in the long-travel enduro category, and we've put the bike together with a host of hand-picked parts that offer the perfect balance of durability and performance without breaking the bank.

We would slot the Megatower in right between the DH World Cup-winning V10 and its venerable Nomad as far as its capability on demanding trails, however, that's only part of the story. It's pretty damn versatile too. Sure, it likes to go fast and provides the security of a safety net at high speeds on technical trails, however, unlike the V10, and to a lesser extent, the Nomad, we would whole-heartily throw a leg over the Megatower at almost any trailhead we've visited as it can simply devour almost any terrain without hardly a weight or, thanks to its steep seat tube angle (76-76.8 degrees depending on size), pedaling penalty.

This Competitive Cyclist custom build gets a RockShox Super Deluxe shock out back and a 38mm RockShox Zeb up front to tame chunder, square-edge rock slabs, and waterbar steps. We offer two rear shock options. They share the same design and function, but the SDS+ offers a Threshold lever for adjusting the compression circuit. SRAM's GX Eagle 12-speed group offers the same wide range of gears as the pricer X01 and XX1 groups providing plenty of ratios for climbing and descending. Brakes also come from SRAM and are Code R's bringing the big bike down from speed with plenty of power, modulation, and confidence thanks to its 4-pistons and 200mm front rotor. The bike rolls on stout e*thirteen wheels with grippy 2.4in tires, and comes with a 150mm or 170mm dropper post depending on the selected size.

There customer service is poor on bikes. It’s an awesome bike but they put a bad tire on it. No response. They also keep asking me to write reviews when I already have. Anyway, great bike but they cheaped out on the build probably not worth the 5k.

Impressive performance/great service

Coming from an Evil Wreckoning this is an absolute major upgrade in sense of climbing performance and body position and just how the bike feels over all. It doesn’t feel as HUGE as the Evil did. Feels like a cross country or trail Bike. What’s impressed me the most is the climbing ability, I’m not a big climber but you’ve to climb to go down and I appreciate a lot how well this bike climbs. It developed a creaking sound after the first ride which I thought was the fork but ended up being the headset so careful with those cane creek headsets out there. These guys at backcountry shipped it all good and were very responsive and quick when I expressed my concern with the noise. They ended up helping me out with a Chris King headset. I’ve no complains with their service and just like any other machinery/vehicle they’re made by imperfect humans so there’s always a possibility of it having something wrong out of the box but these guys rock with their service. The bike is incredibly amazing, the uphill is much much easier now and going downhill it’s pretty stable and playful. So glad I got rid of the Evil to buy this bike. By the way I ride the rocky, sandy, chunky, hilly and hot Arizona desert lol.

The bike might be good but Backcountry..

Backcountry/Competitive cyclist are NOT good, buy the bike somewhere else. I bought this two weeks ago and have had nothing but problems. Ridden it once, it's been in the shop more than the trail due to carelessness of whoever built it, "tested" it ( Which now seems impossible), and shipped it. Maybe if it ever comes out of the shop it will be nice, but for now, it;s not.

Let's start with the plain and simple, this is a hell of a lot more bike than I need, but man is it fun to ride. This beast rolls over everything I have thrown at it without even a second thought and corners a lot better than I expected from such a big bike. I look forward to riding this the rest of the summer.

What can I say about this bike other than its just plain sick!!! I took this thing all over the trails Utah has to offer. From sandstone to granite it held up in all conditions. I was worried about how "the meg" would hold up on the steep and technical climbs but it held its own against some buddies hard tails. I never had the rear suspension locked out on the climbs because the super deluxe select just knows how to keep that pedal stroke from effecting traction. On the downhill the Megatower seems to be a cross breed between a UFO and a Puma. Skipping over even the largest of rocks that even a Bronson would fold in half by simply looking at them. Agile for a 29er ( especially since I used to be against 29ers for anything downhill) It takes technical turns as whippy as it does those perfect bermed turns at your favorite resort. As far as messing with the flip-chip I say go for it. Its fun to mess around and see what kind of stability you need! The only upgrades I would consider would be lightening up the drivetrain or any other components (though not necessary) as its a bit heavy for being carbon. But for now Ill have to deal with having thunder thighs. Overall, this is an amazing bike, crush the whistler bike park one day and the next cruise 50 miles of cross country with out wishing you had an XC.
