Plunder the chunder.

Let's face it, there aren't a lot of riders that prefer loose, rock-strewn trails that consistently rob your speed with chunky impediments and soft spots. Alleviating this traction and speed-carrying problem, the Santa Cruz Hightower Carbon CC 27.5+ XO1 Eagle ENVE Complete Mountain Bike is equipped with the voluminous support and plush shock-absorption afforded by 27.5+ wheels. This plus-sized option is gaining momentum with riders encountering jarring rocks and loose soil on their local trails, as you can drastically lower tire pressure for a smooth, planted ride with gobs of traction.

One of the more unique features with the Hightower is its flip chip, which allows you to swap between 27.5+ and 29-inch wheels with minimal impact on its slackened, confidence-inspiring geometry. This is a great feature if you're seeking a bit more versatility for enduro racing and trail riding alike. In its 27.5+ form, the Hightower accommodates 2.8-inch tires for ample traction and plushness across the rough stuff. We recommend sticking with this tire size, as larger 3.0-inch rubber may present clearance issues with certain tire manufacturers.

If the Hightower's ability to swap between wheel sizes gives you a taste of its versatility, then the bike's aggressively long, slackened geometry solidifies its status as a dreamy trail machine. It represents the evolution of Santa Cruz's earlier and much loved Tallboy LT, updated with greater stand-over clearance and shortened chainstays for snappier handling. Further consider its 150/135 millimeters of travel at the front and rear for one that's impressively capable on rowdy descents, yet never unwieldy when you're riding across tamer trail networks.

Borrowing its suspension from the big-hit brawling Nomad, the Hightower uses the third generation of Santa Cruz's VPP suspension. It's referred to by Santa Cruz as VPP3, serving up increased mid-stroke support and greater traction at the top of its travel range. It features a re-positioned lower link that's neatly tucked above the bottom bracket, reducing damage from the punishing debris you'll be cruising over with the Hightower's monster-truck tires. The upper link is now attached to the top tube, allowing for increased standover height and greater rear end stiffness.

This particular build employs Santa Cruz's CC-level carbon, which reduces the frame's weight by a generous 230 grams (just a tick over 8 ounces)—all without sacrificing structural stiffness or strength. This top-shelf frame is complemented by the carbon construction of an ENVE M60 Forty Plus Wheelset. This plus-sized wheelset is intended for trail and all-mountain use, offering uncompromising stiffness for cleaning technical lines with precision. And when it's time to pedal uphill again, the XO1 Eagle drivetrain's massive range conserves precious energy for rowdy descents and flowing berms that follow.

  • Santa Cruz's ultimate 27.5+ trail bike
  • 27.5+ wheels offer a plush feel across rough chunder
  • Responsive pedaling platform with 5.3in of VPP travel
  • Carbon CC frame reduces weight and maintains stiffness
  • Spacious geometry inspires confidence at high speeds
  • Flip chip accommodates both 27.5+ and 29in wheels
  • ENVE m60 Forty Plus wheels for snappy stiffness
  • Santa Cruz leads the industry with innovative design and legendary quality

Plowability Plus + Crushability

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

There is so much to consider when buying a new mountain bike but 2017 is the year of Plus + tires. Out here in Utah, plus tires make a lot of sense considering the variety of our terrain between Moab, Park City, St. George and beyond. After demoing a lot of different bikes I landed on this Hightower 27.5+ with Eagle X01 drivetrain and ENVE M60 wheels. My pup Jasper (pic below) and I could not be happier with the choice.
I love the balance of the super stiff ENVE M60 Wheels and the low air pressure (~18 PSI) in the 27.5+ Maxxis tires. I feel like I can plow over anything and still have precise control around corners and berms. I will probably end up adding a Maxxis DHF on the front for the larger knobs on the outside of the tread. I have been working on a modified rating system for all the bikes I have tested and here is my breakdown for the Hightower:
Plowability - 9.5
Climbability - 8.5
Maneuverability - 8
Wheelie Rating - 8
Closest Competitors: Yeti SB5.5, Niner RIP 9
Feel free to contact me directly with any questions on the Hightower or any other Santa Cruz bikes. I would be glad to help you build your next dream bike from the frame up. Also check out my article on "How to Choose a Mountain Bike" for additional info.
