Why We Like The Santa Cruz Hightower C R Mountain Bike
From singletrack shreds to aggressive enduro descents, the Hightower has long been our go-to big-wheeled steed for almost any trail we encounter. For the fourth generation of the Hightower, Santa Cruz pulled out all the stops, equipping us with more travel in both the front and rear, geometry improvements, a redesigned suspension layout, and new frame features for more capability all over the mountain.Santa Cruz ramped up the Hightower's travel to 150mm of VPP rear suspension, now standing alongside the Bronson as a dedicated 29-inch option in the aggressive trail/enduro category. The revised VPP suspension pivot placement and kinematics reduce anti-squat characteristics and make for a more active suspension, offering us a smoother, more plush ride for more traction all over the mountain. The Hightower has a slacker head tube angle and longer chainstays across all sizes, effectively making the bike longer and shifting our weight bias more towards the center of the bike for a more balanced ride and more stability in steep terrain. The Hightower still sports its dual 29-inch wheels for maximum traction and rollover capability, helping to carry our speed through rougher terrain better than other wheel sizes. The finishing features for the Hightower include chainstay and downtube protection, Glovebox internal frame storage, a geometry flip chip, silent internal cable routing, a threaded bottom bracket, and a UDH configuration.
The R build of the Santa Cruz Hightower was put together to ensure reliable performance on the trail at the lowest price point. This build features Santa Cruz's Carbon C frame for stiff handling and a reputation for being durable. The Fox Float Rhythm rear shock equips us with a simple and lightweight setup, while the RockShox Lyrik Select 160mm fork ensures smooth descents and tunable performance. SRAM's NX Eagle drivetrain equips us with a proven and reliable drivetrain and a big gear range, and the Race Face AR 30 aluminum rims ensure a dependable and tough aluminum wheelset. Maxxis DHF and DHRII tires throw down the traction we expect from an all-mountain bike, and the SRAM DB8 Stealth brakes equip us with simple but very powerful mineral oil brakes.
