Description

Cross Country Rocket

The Santa Cruz Highball 29 Carbon CC X01 Eagle complete mountain bike is built purely to be an advantage when the gate drops on your next cross-country race. Feather light, rocket fast, and durable enough to handle the most challenging races, this is a worthy machine for those chasing podiums and points all season long.

The geometry chart makes the Highball’s intent crystal clear, with a fairly steep 70.5-degree head angle, choppy chainstays, and a short wheelbase making for delicate handling. In order to ensure that the handling is quick but not skittish, the Highball is built around a significant 56mm bottom bracket drop, which keeps the rider positioned “in” the bike. The result is a machine that’s incredibly adept at fighting for the lead out of the gate, but retains the stability necessary for hard efforts toward the end of a race.

The focused intent is on display throughout the Highball frame from its oversized bottom bracket area, which ensures maximum power transfer to the stiffness-enhancing thru-axle out back. Counterintuitively, the rear thru-axle also allows for sleeker, smoother-riding seatstays, ensuring that this hardtail race rocket won’t beat its pilot up excessively on the longest races. To that end, the Highball also has a 27.2in seat tube, which was chosen to open the option of a more flexible, and thus more comfortable, seatpost. It pairs well with the threaded bottom bracket, proving that sometimes the old designs are still the best.

The Highball is built using Santa Cruz’s top tier CC carbon fiber construction. By using some of the finest, and strongest, raw materials available, Santa Cruz is able to make its CC level frames extremely lightweight, while maintaining outstanding impact resistance, exceptional stiffness, and just the right amount of finely tuned flex to cancel out trail chatter. Of course, balancing these factors requires true mastery of carbon fiber, and the design team at Santa Cruz has proven time and time again that their command of carbon fiber construction is unsurpassed in the bike industry. The result is a frame that will hold up to years of hard riding, will provide a comfortable ride, and will do so at a very competitive weight.

The X01 Reserve build of the Highball is ready to race right out of the box. The RockShox SID RLT fork provides comfort and control for the bike’s leading edge. SRAM’s excellent X01 Eagle drivetrain provides a massive gear range, while Level TLM brakes keep speed in check on the descents. And it rolls on Santa Cruz’s new Reserve carbon wheels laced to DT Swiss 350 hubs. As with all of Santa Cruz’s carbon fiber frames, the Highball is backed by a lifetime warranty. This being the 29er version, you’ll notice that the sizing chart begins at a size medium. Santa Cruz found that riders needing a size small are typically better served by the 27.5in Highball, which is available in sizes to fit riders from 5’0” tall.

  • Race-focused hardtail for cross country specialists
  • 72.5-degree seat tube angle for efficient power transfer
  • Short wheelbase for responsive handling
  • Carbon CC frame saves weight without sacrificing strength
  • SRAM X01 Eagle drivetrain provides the ultimate bailout gear
