Description

Scintillating speed.

Refined for the competitive needs of cross-country and marathon racers, the Santa Cruz Highball 27.5 Carbon R Complete Mountain Bike has no qualms about its focus on all-out speed and nimble handling when every pedal stroke is crucial to closing the gap on the race day. This particular Highball sports 27.5-inch wheels for quicker cornering and directional changes over the 29-inch version. The Highball 27.5 provides greater stand-over and easier maneuverability for shorter riders choosing the small-sized frame, which is absent on the 29-inch version.

The Carbon C frame maintains superior stiffness while remaining a relatively lightweight affair, translating every stroke of the cranks into forward-surging acceleration. It is approximately 280 grams (that's 9.8 ounces) heavier than Santa Cruz's top-shelf Carbon CC frame, but at the benefit of significant cost savings that you can use for race entry fees and weekend trips to your favorite cross-country networks. Santa Cruz claims the Highball Carbon is one of the stiffest frames they've ever produced, meaning it's exceptionally efficient when you're chasing down KOMs on brutal climbs and sprinting towards the finish on race day.

Delving into the geometry of the Highball 27.5, you'll find its 69-degree head tube balances razor-sharp XC handling traits without feeling unnerving or squirrely on technical XC courses and rock-strewn descents. For a bit more comfort, Santa Cruz engineered it with thinner stays and a 27.2-millimeter seatpost for greater compliance when roots and rocks make their presence known, especially without a rear suspension to smooth out the rough stuff. Another notable design characteristic, the 12.4-inch bottom bracket imparts race car-like handling when you're cleaning tight switchbacks and ripping around turns on the trail.

Looking at this particular Carbon R build, you'll find it's nicely equipped for the price with its RockShox Reba RL 100-millimeter fork maintaining composure across bumpy terrain with its Motion Control RL damper. The Reba RL boasts wider Boost spacing for stiff tracking across rugged terrain and rock-strewn courses, meaning it'll hold its line better when precise handling is paramount on race day. Looking to the drivetrain, you'll enjoy the simplified shifting experience of a SRAM NX 1x11 set-up, which employs a 10 to 42-tooth cassette with ample low-end for powering up steep climbs without compromising its ability to pedal on downhill sections.

  • Santa Cruz's XC whippet with nimble 27.5in wheels
  • 27.5in version available in small for greater stand-over
  • Carbon C frame offers impressive stiffness and efficiency
  • 69-degree head tube balances agility with stability at speed
  • Modern bar + short stem for quick handling on tight XC courses
  • 27.2mm seatpost and thinner stays add a bit of compliance
  • Threaded bottom bracket eliminates annoying creaks
  • SRAM NX 1x11 drivetrain with 10 to 42-tooth cassette
