Upholding its adaptable namesake, the Santa Cruz Chameleon 29 D conquers everything from near-impassable boulders on the trail to blistering-fast XC loops. In 29er form, the Chameleon blurs the line between trail-ripping hardtail and fast-rolling XC whip, allowing you to master both disciplines with the rolling momentum of 29-inch wheels. Slick extras, such as BOOST front and rear axles and internal dropper routing, make it a solid platform for upgrading in the future without worries of obsolescence.
Reinvigorated to match the evolving standards of modern trail bikes, the newest Chameleon sports a longer front end, low-slung bottom bracket of 12.4 inches, snappy-short 16.3-inch chainstays, and a relaxed head tube angle of 67.3 degrees. These geometry figures amount to a well-balanced bike that's confident ripping steep descents and lifting the front up and over trail impediments, yet one that's always eager to ride back uphill.
Although the Chameleon has always been renowned for its adaptability to a wide variety of terrain, it's really outdone itself with the newest version boasting the ability to effortlessly swap between 27.5+ and 29-inch wheels, courtesy of its interchangeable dropouts. These interchangeable dropouts allow you to swap out the gears for singlespeed use, should you desire a no-nonsense drivetrain that excels across flat terrain or simply enjoy pushing your bike without pesky gears. 15-millimeters of fore and aft adjustment manages chain tension and chainstay length.
This particular build benefits immensely from the speed-carrying momentum afforded by its 29-inch wheels. This translates to a faster riding experience when you're racing on the weekends in the local state forest, also providing a greater angle of attack for steam-rolling trail impediments, such as imposing rocks and gnarled roots. The provided 2.3/2.25-inch tubeless tires provide an optimal balance of rolling efficiency and grip. Should you desire to increase tire volume, the Chameleon readily accepts 2.5-inch rubber in its 29er form for greater traction and bump compliancy.
