Santa Cruz Bicycles Bronson Carbon CC GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 $5,300.00
Ready to rumble.
The Bronson 2.0 is no stranger to the office here at Competitive Cycle, seeing we're located along the singletrack Mecca that is Utah's Wasatch Range, which offers everything from lift-accessed bike parks to all-day epics with thousands of feet of climbing and descending. For these purposes, the Santa Cruz Bronson Carbon CC GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike serves as an aggressive machine that's an absolute blast on the descents, yet one that's always eager to pedal back uphill for another grin-inducing lap. This particular build features a special mix of in-house parts that emphasize reliability and one-by shifting simplicity for the all-mountain rider seeking a sweet build, but at a cheaper price than what you'd find with stock Santa Cruz builds carrying their flagship Carbon CC frame.
The second-gen Bronson has undergone extensive changes since its introduction in 2013, implementing design cues from the previous generation of Nomad, including a slackened 66-degree head tube angle, lower bottom bracket, and longer reach for improved stability and confident handling at high speeds. Realizing this, it's really no surprise that the Bronson 2.0 excels on rowdy descents where burlier gravity rigs would normally dominate, yet it still retains its all-terrain versatility and balance that originally made it one of the most popular six-inch bikes on the market.
For 2017, Boost thru-axles grace the front and rear ends of the bike, so you'll reap the benefits of a stiff, precise-tracking set of hoops when you're smashing through rock gardens and hitting bigger drops. This particular model gets Santa Cruz's premium CC Carbon, which shaves 280 grams from the base C-level carbon. Ultimately, by shaving approximately 10 ounces from the bike's overall weight, you'll find it's even better at climbing for hours at a time, saving precious energy that could otherwise be spent on enjoying the ripping downhill that follows. And although it's lighter than the C-level carbon, it's every bit as strong and stiff, so you'll enjoy instantaneous acceleration while getting on the pedals and robust durability from trail thrashings.
One of the biggest updates to the second generation Bronson lies in the latest iteration of Santa Cruz's VPP suspension, which benefits from the addition of a stiffer box-section upper link paired with a cleanly hidden lower link that prevents damaging rock strikes on the trail. This revised suspension platform enjoys increased small-bump compliance for better traction across bumpy sections of trail with roots and rocks. There's less of a tendency for it to settle in the middle of its stroke, meaning it feels more active and tracks to the ground noticeably better than previous iterations of VPP, which often suffered from the "mid-stroke wallow." It's still very progressive at end stroke, ramping up aggressively to prevent you from bottoming out on bigger hits and rowdy sections of trail where the six inches of rear travel would normally be maxed out.
Delving into the specifics of this build, you'll find the SRAM GX Eagle 1x12 drivetrain offers a massive range of usable gears with its 10 to 50-tooth cassette. This version of Eagle is a bit more economical for the discerning rider looking for something they can pedal across massive swaths of alpine terrain, but without emptying their funds for riding trips and future bike upgrades. It's complemented with a Fox 34 Factory Fork that's smoother than ever with its grip damper increasing sensitivity over small bumps found on the trail. We round out this stellar build with SRAM Guide RS disc brakes for powerful stopping force and great modulation, as well as a Mercury Enduro Alloy Wheelset for reliable all-mountain strength.
