Why We Like The Bronson Carbon CC 27.5 X01 Eagle Reserve Complete Mountain Bike

The Santa Cruz Bronson CC 27.5 X01 Eagle Reserve bike is a race-ready enduro bike that’s second to none, and gets us out of technical chunder faster than we got in. The Bronson is incredibly capable on the descents, taking a page from the Nomad with the same progressive suspension design and big hit capability. Still able to climb, we find that even with the 150mm of suspension out back the design gets up bits more readily reserved for cross-country race machines. No slouch on the descents, and surprisingly capable on the climbs, we reckon we may just keep the Bronson in the back of our trucks for more than just the weekly big mountain days.

Slacked out with room for plus tires, the Bronson has trail obstacles trembling in fear as we roll up, knowing there’s no scenario that the bike doesn’t make it over them. The 65° head-tube angle soaks up the first few big hits and stays dialed enough for when they keep on coming. Paired with a 160mm fork, the bike soaks up everything we see, and even some of the things we don’t. A fairly steep 75.3° seat-tube angle keeps us dialed in the rear, slack enough to get through the technical bits of trail but steep enough that we’re not sliding off the back climbing fire roads. 2.8in of rear tire clearance is also an appreciated addition, and the larger contact patch with Santa Cruz’s progressive Virtual Pivot Point suspension keeps the bike glued to the ground.

Suspension duties on the X01 are uniquely taken care of by a mix of Rockshox and Fox suspension. A Rockshox Super Deluxe keeps things under control in the rear, and the Fox 36 up front keeps our hands glued to the bars. We’re also stocked on the Reserve Carbon wheels, and their lifetime warranty is almost unnecessary, as the rims have been proven time and time again to take the worst punishment we can throw at them. No stranger to drivetrain abuse, the enduro-rated X01 drivetrain is as smooth as they come, and the mechanical group means we’ll never be stuck on the trail with a dead battery.

The Bronson is a bike built for sending, whether it’s through techy chunder or big gaps, we’re confident throwing a leg over this bike knowing we’ll probably make it back to the car safely. The 27.5in wheels keep the bike nimble in the chunder, and the slack head angle and large 2.6in tires up front roll just as efficiently as our favorite 29ers. This impressive rig doesn’t know when to call it quits, soaking up mile after mile while keeping the fun between our legs. While we’re not dedicating the Bronson as our only bike just yet, we are thoroughly impressed and can’t wait to get some more park laps in next weekend.
