Why We Like The Tomahawk Fat Bike Ready Upright Mount

When the innovative minds at RockyMounts decided that fat bike racks were too few and far between, they created the Tomahawk Fat Bike Ready Upright Mount. With the overall structure carried over from the venerated BrassKnuckle and its new capability to fit any bike ranging from 20-29 inches with any road, mountain, or fat tires, we think the Tomahawk is a valuable addition to the current crop of roof racks being offered.

RockyMounts set out to make the Tomahawk as adaptable as possible, creating it with an interchangeable arm so that it can be mounted on the driver or passenger side of a vehicle with a swingarm that will hold your precious cargo in place without touching its frame. To accommodate a fat bike, RockyMounts includes two wheel strap extensions that work with tires up to five inches wide, as well as universal hardware that will pair effectively with any style of crossbar on your vehicle.

Easy to use. Works well. Some cheapness.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I'd give it a higher rating but it's got some downgrades from previous models that are inexcusable. I don't mind putting the rack together, all-in-all it took only about 5-10 minutes. The frustrating process is installing it on the roof of your car. Previous models were much more user-friendly with a strap design that would wrap under the bar and slot into the rack, then tighten with a single 6mm allen key. The current model uses a total of 6 allen bolts, three more than the aforementioned previous model. It's not nearly as easy to swap from vehicle to vehicle and installing the rack takes 3x as long. Previous models would also come with locks for the same price. However, I do think this is one of the better and most secure roof racks on the market and I still recommend it. It's great that it fits basically every bike on the market without the need to purchase adapters.

Fantastic Roof Mount Bike Rack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Rockymounts Tomahawk is a fantastic bike rack if you are looking to carry your bikes on your roof crossbars and you don't want to remove the front tire. It's heavy duty, well engineered, and makes loading/unloading a bike very easy (I'm 5'11" and my car is a Civic). It fits a wide variety of wheel sizes. Although it is listed as a Fat tire bike carrier, it holds my 700x23c road bike or my 27.5x2.3" mountain bike equally securely. This is the first Rockymounts product I have purchased. I'm certain that it won't be my last. To top it off, Backcountry offers the Tomahawk at a great price with rapid shipping. Win-win!

Great rack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a well built, sturdy rack. It fits my 2.8 tires nicely without needing to use the fat bike extender (which is included regardless). It was 3/5 annoying to put together, it took about 20 minutes and I needed to use a youtube video because the included instructions were not very helpful. As with all roof racks, it is a challenge to get a MTB on. I am 5' 6" and have a subaru outback and I can manage to get it on the car but I feel like I risk slipping every time I do it -- much more comfortable with a little fold up stool which I just pop in the car every time I ride.

Fast, easy, reliable.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've only used this with a road bike and it's great. It took about 10 minutes to install it on my crossbars. It's nice not having to take off the front wheel, but you should know racks of this style (not specific to this rack) are less theft proof even with the lock cores because someone could just take a wheel off the bike and walk away with everything. Great rack though, the lock core is still a good deterrent, and I just lock the bike to the roof rack with a bigger lock if I'm ever away from the car for a longer time.
