X-Trail Apex 1 650b Complete Bike

More and more cyclists are finding rides that venture off the beaten path and away from cars. Gravel grinding or all-road riding has taken off in recent years, enough so that manufacturers took note and began building bikes specific to the task at hand. Unique geometry and other features separate these bikes from traditional 'cross and road machines, and riders looking to maximize enjoyment rather than staying within a certain percentage of FTP are lining up. Given the above, the bike many of us are most excited about from Ridley's X-Trail lineup is the X-Trail Apex 1 650b Complete Bike. It combines the bomber durability and World Cup DNA of the Belgian brand's expertise in cyclocross and road racing in a road plus-tire platform that's eager to knock out that epic bikepacking trip you've been eyeing for months.

The Ridley X-Trail Adventure is constructed from a triple butted 6061-T6 alloy frame that is plenty stiff and lightweight and supremely durable. Ridley dropped the bottom bracket height relative to its cyclocross and road bikes for improved stability over rough roads, and the lower center of gravity improves handling especially while loaded for touring. A tapered headtube guides the front end extra rigidity, and the PF86 bottom bracket ensures all pedaling efforts go directly into forward propulsion.

A 12 x 142mm rear thru axle rear improves stiffness, aligns the rotor/caliper each time the wheel is installed, and keeps the axle anchored in the frame over rough terrain. The Oryx carbon fork utilizes a 12mm thru-axle to fight flex and ensure the front end doesn't deflect on high-speed descents over washboards. Flat mounts on the frame and fork allow the TRP Spyre disc calipers to cleanly mount and stay out of the way, preventing damage. The mechanical actuation increases reliability and allows for an easy fix when in the bush. This particular build sees a road plus wheel and tire setup so you'll have extra traction and comfort from the wider rubber run at lower pressure. Specially shaped seatstays take more of the edge off bumpy roads and add compliance to the ride.

This build sees SRAM's 1x Apex groupset supplemented with TRP mechanical brakes. The excellent ergonomics maintain comfort for hours, and the simplified durability of the group encourages trouble-free rolling for years. The dual-piston mechanical brakes offer much better power and modulation versus one fixed/one floating calipers, and changing out cable and housing is way easier than bleeding a brake. The 42t chainring and 11-42t cassette offers plenty of range and is a godsend on extended climbs when loaded down with gear.

Ridley's house brand, Forza components, takes care of the cockpit duties with a lightweight and durable stem, handlebar, post, and saddle. Forza Allroad Adventure 650b wheels roll on Donnelly X'plor MSO 650b x 50mm tires for maximum flotation on the roughest gravel roads. Knock out that all-day adventure, take a week off from the daily grind, or hit up some trails after work on this do it all machine.

My Toyota Tacoma!!

If there was ever a Tacoma of bikes this would have to be it! I ride everything and all conditions on this bike! Every time I go in my garage, it’s the bike I always grab (even though it’s the least fancy one I own). Love the ride, the color, the feel of fat 650b tired under me! Absolutely fantastic value and build quality! I have a Ridley Carbon x trail for comparison. But this bike is my favorite!!

I needed a bicycle to ride the hundreds of miles of dirt and gravel roads near my home. When I saw the Ridley X-Trail, I knew I'd found my bike. I particularly liked the 650b wheels because they bestowed confidence and comfort when riding over the gravel, hardpan, ruts, rocks, loose sand, and animal trails that comprise my rides.

I have put about 300 miles on my Ridley X-Trail and have relished every pedal stroke. I've become enamored of its Belgian character. I like the sense of efficient power transfer and the strength of the frame. The X-Trail handles predictably on long dirt road descents that harbor sandy traps. The quick, precise steering has allowed me to avoid lizards and snakes sunning themselves on hardpack and sandy streambeds.

My X-Trail weighs 27 pounds, 12 ounces equipped with two water bottle cages, a handlebar bag, high quality dual platform pedals, and a rear rack. I have a 33 inch inseam and the medium frame fits perfectly.

The only problem I've experienced is a dropped chain when going too fast over a rock littered trail.

I am of Medicare age. My days of careening down mountain trails on my '83 Stumpjumper are long gone. Now, I ride for the immense enjoyment and health benefits of cycling. It is a good day when I reach for my Ridley X-Trail to embark on a long ride without touching pavement.

Thanks for the review! Do you happen to know what she weighed naked? Also at 5'8" 31.5 inseam or so, would you guess I size down to a small?

Are the wheels tubeless ready? And can this bike take 700x40?

These are not tubeless ready. As for 700x40c, yes you can. The max tire size for a 700c wheel will be 42mm, and 50mm for 650b.

Bought this bike last year to cruise hilly dirt roads in the woods of western New England. The 650 wheels allow 50 mm tires that make this a go anywhere bike that is pure fun to ride. The SRAM Apex 1x drive train is perfect...there's no hill you can't climb. I even ran some Suomi WXC'R 312 27.5x2.25 spiked tires to ride the miles of snow covered dirt roads in the state forests out here last winter. Put some Planet Bike Cascadia fenders on and it was perfect. Such a versatile bike...nice change from a lot of miles on the road bike.

Is this bike also 700c compatible?

I'm pretty sure this is the same X Trail alloy frame used for the 700c versions. I have not tried putting 700c wheels on mine, but there definitely appears to be plenty of room for the increased diameter. I would think 700x42 tires would fit...maybe 45's. Check with Kyle Brown at CC 801-204-4699.

I had the same questions so I called Competitive Cyclist, and based on the person i talked to (Courtney i believe) she said that they're compatible with 700c wheels as well.
