We have noticed a slight resurgence in aluminum bikes and it's fitting that it still has a place in the cycling world. For one, its super durable so if you are looking for a bike that can handle the day in and day out abuse that make up your adventures, it's a solid choice. The strength to weight ratio is also pretty darn good. Remember, this used to be the material de jure for race bikes not too long ago and plenty of folks still race on this material. Aluminum packs a ton of value versus carbon and that money saved can fund some pretty fun escapades. Ridley's X-Trail Alloy 105 Complete Bike is ready to tackle any of your all-road adventures and keep coming back for more. The frame's triple-butted 6061-T6 aluminum is heat-treated to further improve its fatigue resistance, so it's much better suited for backpacking journeys and travel than the nanotube, high-modulus flavor-of-the-month material. Don't get us wrong, we love our carbon road bikes for racing and all-out performance on the tarmac, in fact, we wouldn't trade it for that. But when it comes to mixed road adventures on unfamiliar terrain, give us the X-Trail Alloy and try to wipe the grin off of our face.
While the frame is aluminum, Ridley wisely equips the X-Trail Alloy with a carbon fork. The carbon legs add a bit of chatter absorption to help dampen braking bumps and potholes, while at the same time stiffening the front end so your efforts don't go to waste on steep out of the saddle climbs. The steerer tube is aluminum further contributing to the durability, and the left leg is slightly asymmetrical to offset the torsional forces applied when getting on the brakes. A 15mm thru-axle finds its way on the front to further reinforcing the overall structure against braking forces and helps the fork to track through whatever terrain it's asked to endure. Fender and rack mount attachments are found on the frame and fork so you can put the weight on the bike for multi-day excursions.
The X-Trail's geometry melds numbers and angles from both Ridley's road and 'cross lineup into something that is all its own. Compared to its pure CX rigs, it's got a lower bottom bracket, shorter chainstays, and a taller headtube. This puts you in a less aggressive and slammed racing position so you can ride in comfort for hours and take in all the sights. In contrast to its road racing frames, the longer wheelbase and slacker headtube angle offer more stability that is appreciated at speed over rough terrain. The massive clearance allows for tires up to 40mm adding comfort and traction to any ride. Shimano 105 continues to be the workhorse drop bar group adding durability and value to this build. Fulcrum Racing Sport wheels and Clement X'Plor MSO tires make up the rolling stock while house brand Forza completes the cockpit.
