Beat the pursuit and dodge the hammer.

Ridley's Noah SL Road Frameset blends advantages typically considered mutually exclusive in the cycling industry: saving weight and gaining aerodynamics. While the gains made through weight loss and Ridley's wind-cheating FAST technology may appear marginal when measured individually and for only a brief time, they do add up — especially as the miles and hills tick down to the flamme rouge and you're in a solo move, caught between a paceline of eager pursuers and the man with the hammer. The sprinters are coming; the hammer is falling. Lose weight, lose drag, or lose the race.

This Noah earns the SL suffix — which we assume denotes the industry standard Super Light — through its inclusion of a mix of 60, 40, and 30 ton high modulus carbon fiber. Both the Noah Fast and regular-ol' Noah top out at 50t, and the SL's inclusion of 60t means it can use less material at key points of power transfer while maintaining the same efficiency. Less material equals less weight, and the Noah SL is born. As with the vanilla Noah model, the SL's different carbon moduli are used in different areas of the frame based on desired properties of stiffness, weight, durability, and road noise damping.

This is targeted blend of materials is, admittedly, a common practice across the industry — though few manufacturers go to the extreme of using 60t carbon. The SL also features the industry standard of a tapered head tube for sharp tracking and efficient power transfer. The PF30 bottom bracket, internal cable routing, and electronic group compatibility are also all but expected in frames of this level. What really sets this frame apart is Ridley's signature Future Aero Speed Technology (FAST), which manifests on the Noah SL as the F-Splitfork and F-Surface features.

The F-Splitfork is counter-intuitive in that it actually creates more drag in the wind tunnel — but only while the wheels are standing still. When the wheels are spinning, the F-Splitfork nets a claimed 7.44% less drag than competing fork designs. It achieves this reduction in drag by redirecting the air resistance that spokes encounter at the top of the rotation, when they're moving forward into the wind. Think of the split in the fork as a kind of emergency release valve for the extra wind resistance that a wheel's rotation can create.

While wheel rotation is an obvious target for improving a machine's aerodynamics, the F-Surface paint takes a less conventional approach. Bodies in motion through a surrounding medium (in this case, bicycles through air) create additional drag in the form of stalled air in the body's wake. We'll forgo the details of laminar and turbulent drag by noting that Ridley claims the F-Surface paint on the Noah SL prevents the airflow from prematurely releasing from the frame, which prevents those areas of low-pressure stall for a claimed drag differential of -4.03% at speeds of around 30mph — which is when the hammer and the pursuit will make you thankful for every possible advantage.
