Description

ShockStop Suspension Stem

Long road rides and gravel endeavors take a toll on your body as is, and jarring forces add on to that fatigue while you ride. Redshift Sports aims to take on the harsh vibrations by adding up to 20-millimeters of suspension to the front end of your drop-bar bike with the ShockStop Suspension Stem. The stem uses 5 swappable elastomers that you can fine-tune to the perfect feel for your ride (ships with two pre-installed, three extra), and flexes just right when you encounter rough terrain, potholes, and brake bumps. It's crafted from 6065 T6 aluminum that offers long-lasting durability, and opts for a minimalist design to keep aesthetics looking tidy on your traditional road or gravel bike. The stem is available in an array of lengths with a 6-degree rise, or a 100mm length with 30-degree rise for a upright fit.

Softens Gravel Rds, Elastomers May Wear

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I installed the recommended elastomer "hardness" for my weight and riding style last year, and have this stem on my main gravel bike. Into it's second season, it feels like the elastomer is getting softer. It may be wearing faster than I anticipated. Not a huge deal, I don't have a problem replacing that part each season. It takes a bit to get used to this stem, it will feel like you have a flat front tire at first. But after a few miles it's not noticeable. It really softens the larger bumps on gravel roads, so does exactly what it intends. It's not a replacement for a front suspension fork, but it's an alternative. I think it reduces the fatigue from gravel roads by 10-20% on a ride, so you can go a bit further. Back in the 90's I had a Girvin Flexstem on a hardtail when front suspension was really being brought to the masses. The RedShift stem is similar, but I think it is a bit more polished. The downside of either is while this softens the shock to your arms and shoulders, it really doesn't help with handling on the front end much. The front will still bounce around on ruts and large rocks. For the price, this is a good way to go for gravel bikes. A new suspension fork designed for gravel bikes will cost more and may alter the frame geometry, and may be overkill. I tried a 100mm RS Reba on my gravel bike for a few rides that I borrowed from a 29er HT, it definitely wasn't the best route. (Added too much weight, altered the geometry of the bike)

A lot cheaper than a new front fork

I got this stem for a carbon fiber hybrid bike. The rough roads had really been playing havoc with my hands. I installed the stem and took it out for a ride, it amazingly improved ride. I put in the 60 and 50 shims and really felt very little wiggle or give. The road damage no longer was unpleasant and it rode very well at all speeds and conditions

    Really damps the shocks

I've got it on a non-suspension bike with carbon forks and drop carbon handlebars. Feels a little weird at first to have the bars dip in a bump or when you brake, but no loss of steering precision or feeling of instability - I'll get used to it. And wow, what a relief! I run 130 lbs in the tires and the cracks in the road used to hurt my wrists, let alone manhole covers or worst yet, curbs. Now it's halfway to riding a front-suspension bike, but way lighter. Best upgrade in a long time!

Not a gimmick - works great

This stem is a tad heavier than the carbon stem I replaced on my S-Works CRUX. Have to say it is one of the best additions to a bike I’ve ever installed. I installed elastomers that matched my height, weight and style. That was extreme say. I felt no loss of responsiveness. What the stem does exceptionally well is crush chatter on cobble and other terrain. Reduced wrist fatigue. Gave dampening on sharp obstacles. Cant imagine going to an alternate stem.

Does exactly what it says it will do. Glad I bought it. I like it so much I also did the pre order on their new seat post.
