Description

All-in-one layering system.

Replacing the need for multiple layers when the breeze blows through and cools down your core, the Rapha Women's Brevet Long-Sleeve Windblock Jersey combines the temperature regulation of a merino wool base layer with the wind-blocking protection of a lightweight vest. Now you won't have to worry about wearing a warm base layer and protective vest, seeing the Brevet Windblock Jersey takes the place of both of these garments.

Rapha places a wind-resistant polyester panel along the front of the jersey and the arms, so you won't succumb to whipping breezes that threaten to chill your body. These wind-resistant panels are placed over a soft, moisture-wicking merino base, which maintains hours of comfort and regulates your body temperature without any irritation slowing you down. This wind-blocking jersey is finished with a multitude of functional pockets along the front and rear, as well as reflective details for greater visibility in low-light conditions.

  • Combines temperature regulation with wind protection
  • Wind-blocking front and arm panels keep you warm
  • Merino wool fabric regulates your body temperature
  • Zippered front pockets for storing your essentials
  • Three rear pockets for spare bottles and nutrition
  • Close-to-body fit won't flap in the breeze

Not really sure about this one

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

I know people rave about Rapha products, so when I saw this jersey on sale, I thought I'd give it a try. Reviews on Rapha's site seemed good. I tried it on today for the first time and initially was going to send it back. I had a base layer on and I think that made the fit feel like it was pulling at the chest, so I tried a different, silky base layer with it. That seemed to fix the pulling. (Yes, I know they say you don't need a base layer with this jersey, but I always wear one in this weather) However, the shoulder seams seem a little snug, in that they should have been wider on my shoulders than they are. I am a pretty solid size Small in almost all my cycling gear, with very few exceptions, and I checked the size chart so the small should fit perfectly. It doesn't. In addition to the shoulders & chest area feeling snug, it is short in the front. Not what I would expect from a fall jersey, and I'm not a tall person or have a long torso (if anything I'm a bit short). The merino wool in the stretch panels also seemed very thin for this jersey, and you should know that the "wind blocking" part has pretty much NO stretch to it. But I thought i'd give it a try. Maybe the cut is so that it doesn't bunch when you are in riding position?

The wind blocking part of the jersey definitely does the job, but it's NOT completely wind resistant. There were definitely times when I felt the wind penetrating my arms, and to a lesser extent, my torso. That was disappointing for a jersey at this price. You'd do better with a standard jersey and a proper wind vest.

However, the thing that impressed me was that AFTER I was done and home, I didn't catch a chill like I usually do after a hard ride in 50ish degree weather. Normally, after I get home I need to change ASAP or I get chilled immediately. Instead, the jersey kept me warm, and I didn't catch that chill until after I took it off. That was really great, and meant that I could stretch and eat something and not worry about that awful feeling. That was pretty impressive.

So other than some weird fit issues (and maybe for others it won't be as much of a problem), and just disappointment based on cost, this jersey is ok. Is it worth the discounted price? You'll have to try it and decide for yourself. When I compare this jersey to say the Gabba long sleeve jersey by Castelli, it doesn't come close for me personally. The Gabba is an excellent jersey in this price range and far superior in fit and warmth.

Ariadne,
Thank you for the detailed review of your experiences. I'm sure other riders reading this will appreciate it as well.
