Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I have a pair of freeriders from a few seasons back. They've finally beatup enough that it's time to replace them. I bought a new pair and immediately noticed that the new shoe is lower quality than the older pair. The materials & construction is just not as good as before. The older pair has better cushioning, better quality uppers & insoles, better stitching. The only thing that has remained the same is the stealth sole & styling. As far as I'm concerned it's not nearly the same quality that I've come to expect from 5 Ten. It's still a good mtb shoe, but not as good as it used to be. I'd rather they raise the price a bit than sacrifice quality.
