Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Pertex Quantum face fabric on this vest isn't windproof as stated in the description. I can put my mouth against the front face fabric and blow air through it. Cold air gets through while I ride. It isn't coming through the zipper or around the arm holes either but directly through the fabric.

It simply does not block all the wind, or enough of it to be really useful. Fit is good with no flapping but why bother if it doesn't block the wind?

I also own a Castelli Pro Light Wind Vest (discontinued). It blocks 100% of the wind and has better ventilation in the rear. Buy one if you find it available in your size. I wanted another vest that wasn't flouro. The only reason why I bought the Superleggera is because they didn't have the Pro Light in the color/size I wanted. Performance of the Superleggera is nowhere near as good as the Pro Light.

Not Waterproof
1 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These are not seam sealed. The Castelli website gives these the highest rating for waterproofness and I purchased based on that claim but water very easily gets in through the stitching. Very disappointed and a quite useless product. I'm going to buy wetsuit gloves from XCEL.

These are very warm bibshorts. A wide strap running up the middle of the back, wide and thick chamois, extra layer of fabric (hammock) under the chamois, high back panel supporting the kidneys and overall more robust fabrics all contribute to the warmth of this short and after using them twice in 95° heat they went in the drawer for the remainder of the summer in favor of lighter shorts from Assos or Rapha. To be fair, 7Mesh doesn't market them as summerweight shorts and it isn't a deal breaker but those in very warm climates should keep this in mind.

I'm 5'8", 200 lb and XL fits fine. Craftsmanship is excellent and the fabric is robust. I have the feeling that these will last a long time. The Y shaped yoke is different but effective. I use a base layers all the time, even in summer and so cannot comment on how the shoulder straps feel next to the skin but they are very stable and never dug in.

The chamois is easily the most comfortable I've ever ridden. Elastic Interface has done an amazing job. Wide and thick with excellent coverage in front, it is made of several foam densities with the densest foam under the sit bones.

Warmth, extra comfortable chamois, robust fabrics and a higher cut back adding stability and support make this short my choice for long rides in cooler weather, especially rough gravel rides.

-1 star for overheating me in the summer but otherwise an excellent product for cooler weather in warm climates.

Shipping Damage, Not Poor Quality
4 5

Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Problem identical to the review by 2et6178791 below. Product is unusable out of the box.

Bearing on one of the drums is not pressed correctly. This causes the drum to sit to one side and the end cap retention screw strikes the frame so that the drum will not spin.

The end cap retention screw on the same drum is clearly cross threaded and debris rattles around inside the drum.

Very disappointed. Back they go for a refund.

Update: Received a nice note from Peter Colan, President of SportCrafters stating that the problem is shipping and not manufacturing. The note reads as follows...

"The problem you're showing is caused by the drum(s) taking a hard hit on the end of the axle, which can snap off the inner bearing shoulder on one side, causing not only the drum to migrate to one side but also the noise you hear (which is the inner shoulder). This can happen during shipment. It's extremely rare, we've only seen a few dozen in the last 20 years (after many thousands of drums produced for all the brands we supply) and the shoulder has been beefed up several times over the 20 year life of the mold but we can't anticipate all the abuse it may see. We still support all of the original rollers we built that are in still service after two decades with new belts and feet that typically wear out with time, and are happy to do it!

The screw is there for dynamic balance.. we use a 2-plane dynamic balancer to identify any slight dynamic imbalance and use screws to offset, much like wheel weights on your car. It serves no other purpose.

We have always honored lifetime warranty on our rollers regardless if you're the original purchaser. Please accept our apologies for the damaged drums you've received, and allow us to get you rolling again! --Pete"

I've changed the rating to four stars pending receipt of the new product.
