Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Sidi shoes are terrific, including these. Very well made. I got these b/c I like the ratchet which is secure and doesn't wear out like velcro and is less prone to disabling roadside breakage (which I've seen happen with boa's). Plus, the forefoot velcro straps don't wear out b/c you never have to undo them except to dry after a rain ride. These let me do snug at the ankle, roomy in front. (You can't vary the tension in different parts of the foot w/ some boa systems. Other boa systems have multiple dials which I find unnecessarily complicated.) Also, I wanted at stiff shoe for CX, and I wanted to drop weight from my (cheaper) Dominators. The Spiders weigh 340g (each, size 45, no cleat) which is the same as my Dominators (!), and about 40g heavier than the Sidi Genius 6.6 Vent Carbon, which is the Spiders' road price and style counterpart, and which I've used with great results for a couple years now. Another nit: the Spiders' carbon weave "look" you see in the pics is just texturing of the plastic-like sole, which looks fake and cheap (c'mon Sidi). But, it is not the same sole as the cheaper Sidi's: it is much stiffer than the Dominator sole, and the lugs are replaceable FWIW. Also, you probably wouldn't want a real carbon weave sole for an off-road shoe due to damage hitting/walking around on rocks, gravel etc. In a light rain your feet will stay drier a bit longer in the Lorica (non-mesh) version also currently available and on sale for $199 on this site. For better visibility and venting, and better looks IMHO, get this one. The other white parts will give a bit of extra visibility and nice style even when they're old and the white mesh sections have turned gray. I say that based on my Genius 6.6's which are the same colors, and old now. I haven't seen the Lorica version but based on other Sidi's I've owned--which include mtb and road, cheap and spendy--I don't believe the weight can be more than 10g different between the mesh and Lorica versions (contrary to 1 review I read which said the Lorica Spiders are 400g heavier than Drako's, which is incorrect). Bottom line: great shoe, great price at $199, very practical for CX, XC, mtb trail, and performance oriented roadies running 2-bolt SPDs who want a long-lasting shoe with a stiff sole.
