Ryan Swrote a review of Castelli Cannondale/Garmin Free Aero Race Bib Shorts - Men's on August 12, 2015
Familiarity: I've used it several times
For the discount price, I thought that this deal was too good to be true. I was correct. I was so excited to have these bibs that I immediately cut the tags, slipped them on, and went out on a nice 60 mile ride. I own a pair of Castelli Evoluzione bibs which are more of an entry level bib and I could not tell the difference between my cheap bibs and these "premium" bibs.
Firstly - Competitive Cyclist advertises these as having the luxurious Progetto X2 Air chamois and even shows pictures with this chamois. This is false, the bibs come with a Kiss 3 Air chamois - the same chamois that is in their lower end bibs. It is not particularly comfortable. The progetto was a huge selling point on these bibs for me and I was sadly let down.
Second - The photos show the bibs having shoulder straps with red fabric on the inside, leading one to beleive that this is a higher quality material. This is false as well - the shoulder straps are the exact same material as on the evoluzione and lower end bibs. It is a sigle layer of mesh material that is somewhat rough against the skin on long rides.
Lastly - the "dimpling" of the leg fabric. The dimpling is done on one side of the fabric, the other side does not have the dimples. The left leg of these shorts has the airflow dimples facing outwards (the correct way), while the right leg has the dimpling facing inwards (the wrong way). You can't see it from a couple of meters away, but up close the difference in texture is quite noticeable.
Overall I am very disappointed with the build quality and the fact that I vastly overpaid for features that could be found in much more inexpensive bibs. That being said, these are the best looking bibs around, and the lime green accents look very nice.
