Matthew Wiegand's Bio

recently started road cycling to train for an amazing event called AIDS LifeCycle, a 545 mile ride from SF to LA that raises money for HIV/AIDS organizations. That said, I have slowly been building a cycling wardrobe and have found that all apparel is not created equal! That said, Competitive Cyclist is my "go to" site for all things road bike. Learning a lot and looking forward to my future as a cyclist!

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am 5'7.5", 145 lbs, 30"waist, 38" chest and this jersey is beautiful but a little looser than I'm used to. I purchased a small which is as small as Giordana goes and the midsection is a little loose as well as the length of the jersey being a little too long, nearly covering my entire butt. I just hike it up a bit. Fit states 'slim' but I must be emaciated or something, which I am not, but I also purchased Giordana's EXO jersey and that is considered 'race' cut, however, both jerseys are fairly roomy in my midsection. I like a sleeker true race cut and I assumed since Giordana hails from Italy they'd be like a second skin but they're not. However, if you like looser these are uber comfortable and if you can fill out this jersey with a little thicker frame then it wouldn't be the cut-off-your-ability-to-breathe 'race' cut I've found in other brands. The material/s in this jersey make it stretchy and super light, not restricting. A beautiful kit (purchased the matching sky blue bibs in small which fit perfectly) but I guess I'll have to up my burrito intake to fill it out.

I know they're $325 but they feel like a million bucks! I paired these bibs with the matching white jersey and compression socks and powered through a 98 mile ride! Now, I can't totally credit the EXO system but it definitely helped. The compression on the bibs was just enough to prevent my knees from getting that pulsing/bulging they're-about-to-explode feeling (the ride included 6500 ft. of climbing) and felt luxurious against my skin. The chamois was also very comfortable but for a ten hour ride I did find the last couple hours I was shifting to get comfortable again, but for shorter rides, up to 70 miles, these will probably keep your buns very happy. Also, a reviewer on Youtube said Giordana suggested not using chamois cream with these bibs as it would degrade the aloe vera treatment and to ride in them sans any lubrication, but I have not fact-checked that yet. Also, the knicker part, which I thought was kind of long, is meant to cover the entire calf, so when worn with the matching compression socks only an inch or so of skin show. They stayed very cool, but if you need more ventilation maybe pair with shorter socks. All in all, have worn once, loved them the first, washed them immediately, and definitely itching to use them on the very next ride!

I'm a 10.5US and the size chart puts me at the end of the medium. I have to pull these on tight for them to fit. If you run near the edge of a size go up a size. This just gives me an excuse to now purchase the white ones in size large. Damn you cycling apparel shopping addiction!!!

I have to say I've only worn this jersey once with the matching bib knickers and I powered through 98 miles no problem. This jersey feels like silky air when you put it on (reminds of the 2014 Silverline jersey that I also own). I wore it with an Assos springtime base layer and Capo wind vest in the early morning hours and I stayed warm. Maybe you would need more layering if it dips below 50-55. As for fit I've found Giordana jerseys to run long and a little loose in the midsection for my liking but I am a svelte 5'7.5" and 145 lbs. on a good day with a 29-30 waist and even the size small has some extra room. However, this jersey does not bunch up in the middle along the zipper on the bike which is nice. So the race cut on Giordana is a little more generous than the cut I have found in, say, Louis Garneau or Assos apparel. I'd highly recommend the bib knickers. If you're gonna drop $250 on a jersey why not treat yourself to the matching bibs? The knickers I can tell are going to become a favorite in my wardrobe as will this jersey. I purchased the white. Lastly, the long sleeves that provide compression also double as great protection on sunny days.

Seeing as I don't see many people ever wearing this helmet on the road, especially with the visor, I don't know if I like looking like a futuristic bug or not. It does vent very well in hot weather and the shield is very cool, works to keep my contact lenses from turning into crackly crisps, but I guess you gotta have balls to go Tron in public. Ah well, who cares what people think?! I'm head to toe in spandex anyways...get this helmet!

SIZE DOWN ONE! I bought this in a small, being 5'8", 145 lbs. and thought that Assos was suggesting to size down to achieve more of a race fit...I thought maybe all Assos garments were pretty snug...wrong assumption. They do make larger, club fit items and this is one of them! I got a small in the blue and it was way too billowy. From now on if I buy Assos' garment I will trust their sizing recommendations!

It seems I fall into the end of the size spectrum everywhere. I am a 10.5 US shoe and ordered the size I in black because I like snugger fit apparel and the sock fit perfectly, however I purchased the blue calypso in the same size and seemed tighter, not the right size. That being said these run true to size so if you border a size, even by .5 choose the recommended size and you should be fine. The socks feel great and provide enough warmth for the chillier days in San Francisco and work just as well in warmer weather, but I wear warmer socks typically as my feet get cold easily.

I wanted to love these socks because they're from Assos, so shouldn't all their apparel be flawless. These left a lot to be desired. The fabric bunched in the stripe running up the front as the material is significantly thicker than the rest of the sock. I am used to very form-fitting, streamlined socks and these did not cut it. Sorry Assos, a miss.

At this price definitely pick up a white and black one to wear with different colored kits like I did. These are perfect for moderate climates to keep you warm in the cold and cool in the warm. They fit like a 2nd skin and feel like silk, as per the review below "fluid" is the perfect adjective for this baselayer.

(Review written for the kit)
Love this kit! From the 80's aerobics color scheme, well kinda, to the fit, very Euro, slim-fitting. I am 5'8", 145 lbs. and the size small is pretty tight, race-fit. The bib can feel as if it might not fit but once it does it offers wonderful compression without feeling restrictive, just nicely hugging. The jersey sleeves for some more muscular men might be an issue but I have medium biceps and they show off the arms nicely. As for the chamois it is very comfortable. Have only worn on a couple rides averaging 50 miles or so and was very happy. If you are looking for more of a club fit then size up one, but if you like something more sleek and streamlined, as I do, then follow the size chart measurements, and if you can buy the pieces separately, cheaper that way.

Yup, could not even tell I had rode 45 miles having worn these. The chamois felt like, well, some wondrous combination of suede, velvet and felt all mixed into one luxurious pelvic experience...get 'em and invest in something nice for yourself. you put in all the hard work riding, shouldn't your apparel? And at $215 they are relatively cheap compared to other Assos offerings but it's worth it and plus, you can register your specific pair of Mille bibs on their website and if anything ever goes wrong with them send them back for a replacement. Talk about warranty!
