Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I purchased these bibs for my longer rides but now they are the only thing I want to ride in! I bought the shorts as a backup but the bibs are still my go to pair for every ride! I have at least 6 other brands of shorts and bibs (Pearl Izumi, Specialized, MuMu, Safetti, etc) and was going to save these pricey gems for the long rides but they are so much more comfortable than all my other pairs that I can't bring myself to use anything else on a serious ride. If I dressing for an easy spin for an hour or so and under 30 miles I might force myself to put on something else but then I ride hard and afterwards always notice a little tenderness and ask why did I even bother? That said, there is a short learning curve but it is worth it!
The fit should be snug because these are compression garments to help your circulation! That's why they go down your leg a little farther than some but it helps your quads and also sun protection. Get used to a snug fit and don't buy baggy. They stretch in all directions like crazy so you will see happy campers of 5'8' at 115 wear a small, 5'2" at 110 wear a small, and 5'11' at 148 wear a medium. The front buckle attachment pulling the bibs up at center front gives a very flattering midsection support without any shoulder pressure or chest excursion breathing pressure. For rest room breaks, the unbuckled strap stretches over my helmet and glasses. To go without removing jersey just let it slide down the back and grab from base and hold it or tuck into grippy pant leg. (You don't want it to hit the floor or worse!) To thread back up just use one arm behind back to bring to neck where you grasp with other hand, be sure still not twisted and bring back over head. If you have tight shoulders, you might want to practice the yoga position Cow-faced Pose / Gomukhasana. Or if you can't do this you might have to take your jersey off to put the bib on at rest room breaks. I sometimes unzip the full zip jerseys, hang up then no worries about passing under the jersey. I ride in heat and high humidity so not a problem to remove jersey if necessary. Quarter zip jerseys are not the greatest for speed stops or when first practicing with these bibs.
The black color reflects sun and is cool and evaporative to ride in. The chamois seems more breathable than any other I have experienced! But the pad is the key feature; the un-sewn floating center area just glides along with the pedal strokes and the multi-density cushion is cloud-like. I have ridden 170 miles in one day and many many 100 mile days and now almost all my shorter rides over 4,000 miles easily on these shorts and they look brand new. On multi-day rides, I must hand wash and the odor control is still fabulous; I have other shorts that will not hand wash up as well. That's why I'm going to purchase another pair of the bibs. What else can I say? I don't really like the excessive packaging, Assos button, or the pink tag in the middle of the rear butt seam, but these are minor branding items and have no bearing on performance. These are the best bibs I have ever found and I hope Assos keeps making them! I am not being paid to promote T LaaLaLai S7 bibs!
