Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I usually wear Sidi Drako push shoes. Size 40. I have put the Sidis through 3 years of tough all mountain riding. Never replaced the sole. For whatever reason the Sidi’s started to feel too small and I was having issues. I bought the S-Phyre a month before the BC Bike race. They were comfortable and easy to break in. I agree that the fit is a bit strange across the top. Too tight and the “halves” buckle or overlap.
I missed the heel adjustment. A lot. They looked cool and my toe issues improved. During the race one of the “boa” lines broke. There is also this weird thing that the turning of the knob to tighten down is not standard. On the right foot, you turn it clockwise to tighten. On the left foot, it’s the opposite. It makes sense if you use your left hand, sort of, but takes awhile to retrain the brain. The power transfer is excellent, except for the loose heel. There is a funky material to secure the heel, as stated, but really only holds your sock in place.
What would have been a scratch on the Sidis was a cut on these upper materials. Not all the way through, but on the way.
The real deal breaker is that the Michelin sole has this thin layer between the front and the back, great way the avoid slipping on the hard carbon sole of the Sidis, if you miss clipping in. However, that thin part merges with the lugged sole, which eventually tore after 3 months. I returned them. Customer service was fantastic!!! I now switched back to Sidi, but went all out and got the new Tiger. Love the shoe! The toe box is wider than a standard Sidi, fixing my toe issues. I am expecting to get many good years of use out of these shoes!
Oh, the cool blue color loses it’s cool with dust or mud.
