Familiarity: I've used it several times
Bought some Keegan shoes to try something new after my 3rd pair of FiveTens wore out. Not a fan of FiveTens ; they have never been particularly comfortable or long lasting, but they absolutely work. The "Stelath" rubber bites into the pedal and sticks tenaciously, but wears out after about 5 months. They would give a solid, reliable connection to the pedal. I use Hope F20s, which have pretty sharp pins.
Two rides in with the Keegans, and I am very disappointed. VERY little grip on the pedals with these shoes. Unsettling and gives me little confidence that my feet will stay on the pedals through the rocky, steep downhill sections we have here in Phoenix AZ. I find my foot bouncing and shifting often. Furthermore, after only 2 rides, I already see small chunks of rubber coming off of the sole. The hard edges of the concave areas on the sole are going to wear far faster than the circles on a FiveTen sole.
However, the Keegans are far more comfortable than any FiveTen I've had (Freeriders and Impacts). They also look great, which is good, because these have no business being used as a bike shoe and will be relegated to casual wear only.
Great casual shoe, but worthless for me as a bike shoe. Still searching for a worthy alternative to FiveTens.
